Ji Han met his gaze calmly: “What are you going on about now.”

Zhao Jian Gue continued as if he hadn’t heard: “I know that in your heart, I’m-”

Ji Han remained stoic as he stated: “This Venerable One would definitely never risk their life for a sword.”

Zhao Jian Gue was stunned for a long time, without waiting for him to recover Ji Han seemed intent on changing conversation topics, quickly intoning: “Sometimes I also wonder if my parents would approve of me practicing martial arts if they were still alive.”

Zhao Jian Gue couldn’t help asking him: “Who were your parents?”

Ji Han answered: “I only know that they were sect people and were best friends with my adoptive father. As for the rest……adoptive father never mentioned more than that.”

Zhao Jian Gue understood.

He theorized that Ji Han’s parents should be dead by now. A best friend taking in and rearing their best friend’s child was a very common occurrence in the martial world.

Ji Han intoned: “I have never heard rumors in the martial world regarding your parents.”

When a person becomes number one swordsman in the world, their parents would naturally gain some fame alongside them.

Zhao Jian Gue intoned; “I don’t know who mine are either. Someone threw me on the steps of a mountain where my master found me and took me in.”

In this regard, the two of them could quite sympathize with each other.

Ji Han asked him: “Your master must have treated you really well.”

Zhao Jian Gue nodded slowly: “He treated me just like a real father.”

Ji Han didn’t reply.

Zhao Jian Gue didn’t know where he’d spoken wrong, he could only stare nervously at Ji Han. The boy could only furrow his brows, asking him: “Do you have any shixiong* or shidi*?”

Zhao Jian Gue intoned: “I have three disciple siblings.”

Ji Han: “Are you the eldest disciple?”

Zhao Jian Gue nodded his head: “I tend to travel around the world most of the time while Second Shidi is a bailiff at Liu San Min. Third Shimei** married into the Medicinal Heaven Valley. At the present, there is only the youngest disciple still with the master.”

Ji Han seemed to find be very interested in this matter: “Sounds like you guys have a good relationship.”

“We all came into the sect around the same time. With all of us around the same age we always played together from a young age.” Zhao Jian Gue continued, “Only the youngest disciple brother came in a bit later; his age is a little bit younger than you. Still to this day, master still has to coax him into… …taking his medication.”

Before he finished that statement, the corner of Zhao Jian Gue’s lips couldn’t help curling up.

It couldn’t be considered a full on laugh but compared to the previous “smile” it was much more delightful looking.

Ji Han wasn’t sure if he was happy after suddenly recalling past pleasant memories in the sect, or if he was laughing at the fact that Ji Han was just like his youngest disciple sibling in loathing bitter tasting medication.

For an unknown reason, he experienced a bit of speechlessness.

Zhao Jian Gue: “You seem to be quite interested in my sect.”

Ji Han stated: “I don’t have any disciple siblings, I was just curious is all.”

Zhao Jian Gue was a bit dazed: “That child… …wasn’t he around the same age as you?”

Children around the same age could easily become friends, moreover, because of the two’s relationship, they should be even more likely to develop a sibling-like bond.

Ji Han’s expression became slightly unsettled: “As soon as I was able to pick up the sword, I was spending all my time in the training room. Since he never practiced martial arts, I really had no time to meet with him.”

Zhao Jian Gue frowned: “When you weren’t practicing swords, there would bound to be times to hang around.”

Ji Han spoke quietly: “Adopted father didn’t like me meeting with him.”

Zhao Jian Gue didn’t know what to say here.

He felt like his heart had been tied into several knots. In his subconscious he felt that the former leader didn’t seem to treat Ji Han as well as everyone thought.

Ji Han continued: “I just remember that when I was younger and refused to practice martial arts, my adoptive father would send someone down the mountain to buy candy as an incentive.”

Zhao Jian Gue intuitively asked: “Pine nut candy?”

Ji Han replied: “At that time I was only 6-7 years old, my favorite was candied haws, delicious and nice looking, but by the time I grew older and could practice without incentives, I pretty much stopped eating sugar when this tactic was no longer needed.”

Zhao Jian Gue quietly took note of this fact.

Mmm, so Ji Han liked candied haws.

The Head Maid lightly knocked on their door.

Doctor Yan came to change the Sect Leader’s bandages. Since he didn’t like any witnessing while he worked, Zhao Jian Gue had no choice but to step out.

Xiao Lin and the Head Maid waited for him in the corridor, Zhao Jian Gue was deep in rumination when he saw them. He couldn’t resist asking them: “Can I step out down the mountain these next few days?”

The Head Maid hesitated before answering: “This matter… …Gongzi Zhao should be inquiring with the Sect Leader.”

Zhao Jian Gue nodded his head. He theorized that since he was not a part of the Demon Sect, the Head Maid was afraid he intended to escape with some kind of stolen intelligence to pass onto the Hao Ran League.

Xiao Lin in curiosity asked: “Hero Zhao, what does your respected self want to do down the mountain?”

Zhao Jian Gue had slight hesitation while answering: “I… …want to purchase a few things.”

The Head Maid added: “Gongzi Zhao, I can send someone to retrieve whatever you are in need of.”

Zhao Jian Gue furrowed his brows: “… …it’s okay.”

After changing the dressing for Ji Han, Doctor Yan seemed to have little communication with the boy before stepping out the door with an unpleasant expression, shooting the Head Maid a cold glance before instructing her and Xiao Lin to go clean up the soiled bandages.

The two entered the room with Zhao Jian Gue intending to do the same.

Yet, when he stepped past Doctor Yan, he suddenly heard the man say lightly: “I think you don’t actually like him as much as you claim.”

Zhao Jian Gue stopped in his steps.

“Your attitude towards him… …is just out of guilt.” Doctor Yan stated, “And the feelings he has for you is also just guilt mixed in with a bit of responsibility.”

Zhao Jian Gue locked eyes with him coldly: “Just what are you saying?”

Doctor Yan smiled slightly: “Both of you are just quite interesting.”

Zhao Jian Gue already really disliked this person, now that dislike grew even more intense.

Xiao Lin ran out just then and beckoned Zhao Jian Gue over, “Hero Zhao, the leader is asking for your respected self.”

Zhao Jian Gue gave one more glance at Doctor Yan, deciding not to pay him any mind, before stepping into the room.

Ji Han instructed the Head Maid and Xiao Lin to leave, before telling him suddenly: “I heard everything.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

People who practiced martial arts would naturally have more adept ears and eyes compared to the average person.

Ji Han stated: “He’s an odd person, but his medical skills are indeed remarkable.”

Zhao Jian Gue asked: “He’s also a member of your sect?”

Ji Han shook his head: “He’s not part of the Demon Sect. When adoptive father was ill, sect members sent for him from Medicinal Heaven Valley, but he said he healed only the sick not the mortally ill… … no matter what he was unable to save adoptive father’s life.”

Zhao Jian Gue hastily added: “I shouldn’t have asked.”

Ji Han sighed.

“I heard from Xiao Lin that you want to go down the mountain for some shopping,” Ji Han’s tone was light as he spoke, “I won’t stop you but the Elders of the sect will naturally be unsettled, I may have to send a couple people to go with you.”

Zhao Jian Gue nodded.

Ji Han said: “Really with your prowess, even if I were to send people to restrict you they wouldn’t be able to do much should you choose to leave.”

Zhao Jian Gue didn’t reply.

He really only wanted to do some light shopping, why did it suddenly seem like he was intending to leave.

Fortunately, he had long since mentally assimilated the contents of both script books.

Ji Han parted his lips as if wanting to say some more.

Zhao Jian Gue suddenly took ahold of his hand.

Zhao Jian Gue: “Don’t worry, I definitely will return on time.”

Ji Han: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue: “I promised you before, to come every day to help you take medicine.”

Ji Han: “No need… …”

Zhao Jian Gue: “I definitely will not abandon you on your own.”

Ji Han stiffly moved, drawing back his hands. “You’re so fulsome… …”

Zhao Jian Gue replied; “These are heartfelt words.”

He once again clenched onto Ji Han’s hands.

Ji Han tried still to break free, intoning: “I don’t want to hear your heartfelt words.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “Perhaps you like to listen to some flippant flattery?”

Ji Han: “No. This Venerable One doesn’t want to hear that either.”

Zhao Jian Gue thought for a bit, before saying: “The people at the base of the mountain are not as beautiful as you.”

Ji Han: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue: “Even if they gave me ten boxes of gold, I will still not run away.”

Ji Han: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue added affectionately: “[Wishing to obtain one person’s heart never to be apart]*.”

Ji Han: “… …shut up.”

He said this while already giving up that he couldn’t pull his hands free from Zhao Jian Gue.

Zhao Jian Gue stated: “I’ve already obtained it.”

Zhao Jian Gue finally was able to leave the Demon Sect and go down the mountain.

The ones assigned to accompany him were several guards with Enforcer Flower leading, Ji Han explained to him that these were all people he trusted and so no one would trouble him so he needn’t worry.

At the bottom of the Demon Sect Mountain base was a small flourishing town. Most of the people who lived in the town were the families of the Demon Sect members. They just happened to be visiting during a temple festival; all the streets were bustling with various hawkers and excited crowds.

Many people seemed to know Enforcer Flower. Greeting her inevitably led their gazes to fall on Zhao Jian Gue, their eyes lingering for a bit longer than normal, in all likelihood thinking what a beautiful couple the two made. Someone brave enough walked up with a smile to ask: “Enforcer Flower has finally landed a good husband?”

Enforcer Flower spared that man a fleeting glance: “Wei Qi! Wei San Er! Don’t talk nonsense, be careful the Sect Leader doesn’t cut your tongues out.”

Wei Qi didn’t understand: “What does this have to do with Sect Leader?”

Enforcer Flower pointed at Zhao Jian Gue, a profound expression on her face: “He’s the Sect Leader’s property.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Wei Qi suddenly realize his mistake.

People around them heard the dialogue and turned their heads to stare at them.

Zhao Jian Gue maintained a neutral expression though he felt disturbed by their numerous gazes, so he lowered his gaze to pretend he was interested in the goods offered by a fruit stand.

That stall owner asked him, “Does this gongzi have his eye on something?”

Zhao Jian Gue didn’t answer.

Behind him, Enforcer Flower stepped over, addressing the stall owner: “Just looking around.”

Seeing her the stall owner suddenly grabbed a basket of fruit and quickly stuffed it into Zhao Jian Gue’s arms.

Zhao Jian Gue was stunned, asking: “What are you… …”

Stall owner: “This gongzi need not be modest! This is a gift from this humble person to your respected self!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …huh?”

Stall owner: “Whatever else this gongzi is interested in please feel free to take!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “This… …rewards should not be given without equal payment.”

Behind him someone else suddenly shouted: “Gongzi!”

He turned around to see someone carrying a tightly locked basket that contained a live reed flower chicken that then got thrown through the air straight into Zhao Jian Gue’s arms as well.

Zhao Jian Gue: “…and what is this?”

That man said: “I heard that the Sect Leader was recently injured, will this gongzi take this back to give him nutrients!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “No… …”

The man replied: “This gongzi need not show gratitude! So long as this gongzi is happy then everything is good!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue was completely surrounded by a group of people, no longer willing to say anything anymore.

Enforcer Flower could no longer contain her laughter.

Wei Qi looked over Zhao Jian Gue from head to toe for a long time, before finally saying to Enforcer Flower: “Acceptable. This physique. The Sect Leader’s taste is not bad.”

Enforcer Flower nodded their head: “Indeed not bad, even able to catch the number one swordsman.”

Wei Qi: “… …what did you just say?”

Enforcer Flower pointed at Zhao Jian Gue before saying with a smile: “Don’t you think he looks a bit familiar?”

“He’s Zhao-” Wei Qi choked, paused for a bit and then finally sighed, saying: “As a plebeian I am indeed unable to understand the Sect Leader’s taste.”

54

On the way back up the mountain to the Demon Sect, Zhao Jian Gue thought it was a good thing that Ji Han had sent escorts to accompany him. Otherwise, he really wouldn’t know how to take the huge pile of gifts back with him to the sect.

Enforcer Flower stood at his side saying: “This trip has reaped a lot of rewards.”

Zhao Jian Gue didn’t say anything.

In his hand he cradled a bunch of candied haws, along with a rattle drum that a stall owner had insisted on giving him.

The relatives of the Demon Sect were simply too… … too enthusiastic.

He didn’t know where he could send these items to, those escorts sent the vegetables and poultry into the kitchen while the rest was brought back to Ji Han’s residence.

… …

Zhao Jian Gue didn’t expect that Ji Han was already able to get off the bed and actually walk by then. Xiao Lin held onto his arm while he strolled through the courtyard.

Ji Han watched the guards bring in various sized packages, was a bit dazed before asking in amazement: “You bought all this?”

Zhao Jian Gue: “No… …”

Enforcer Flower explained: “This was all gifted by the townspeople.”

Ji Han didn’t understand: “Why would they gift these things?”

Enforcer Flower: “Oh, they heard that Gongzi Zhao was Sect Leader’s property and unavoidably were all a bit excited so they—“

Ji Han: “WHOSE PROPERTY?!”

Enforcer Flower slowly answered: “Naturally, he is the respected Sect Leader’s—”

Ji Han: “BULLSHIT!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Enforcer Flower: “But that morning in bed—”

Ji Han glared at her viciously: “You say anymore nonsense, this Venerable One will pull out your tongue!”

Enforcer Flower covered her own mouth, as if to stop herself from laughing.

Ji Han glanced at everything on the ground, then shouted: “OUT! THROW EVERY ONE OF THESE THINGS OUT!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

The escorts had no choice but to once more start moving everything, this time out of the residence.

Ji Han pointed at Zhao Jian Gue, barking: “YOU ARE NO LONGER ALLOWED TO GO DOWN THE MOUNTAIN!”

Zhao Jian Gue really didn’t understand what he was mad about.

Enforcer Flower finally couldn’t help emitting a light chuckle.

Ji Han shot an icy glare at her: “WHAT ARE YOU LAUGHING AT! YOU AS WELL, GET OUT OF HERE!”

Enforcer Flower glanced at Zhao Jian Gue for a bit before dragging Xiao Lin out with her, a smile gracing her lips.

Zhao Jian Gue looked at the candied haws and rattle drum in his palms, silently hiding his hands behind himself.

Ji Han temperament was a bit too overexerted, unavoidably causing himself to cough a few times. He saw that Zhao Jian Gue’s hands seemed to still be carrying something and immediately became angry again.

“What else are you carrying in your hand?!” Ji Han shouted, “This Venerable One said to throw everything out!”

Zhao Jian Gue stated in an aggrieved tone: “But I paid money for them!”

Although that one hawker refused to collect money, he still managed to stuff him a couple of copper coins in the end.

Ji Han furrowed his brows at him: “You bought it? What did you buy?”

Zhao Jian Gue didn’t answer.

Ji Han ordered in a slow voice: “Bring it here.”

Zhao Jian Gue reluctantly brought out his right hand.

His palm held a bunch of candied haws.

Ji Han was slightly startled: “You went down the mountain just to buy this?”

Zhao Jian Gue didn’t answer.

Ji Han sighed, grudgingly said: “I did like these as a kid but I’ve long moved pass that age.”

Zhao Jian Gue heard what he said and started to retract his hand.

“Wait,” Ji Han stated, “This was a thoughtful gesture on your part. You went to buy this for me so I’m very happy.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Ji Han continued: “Give me the candied haws… …what else are you holding?”

Zhao Jian Gue had no choice but to also bring forth his other hand.

When he was buying the candied haws, the nearby hawker insisted on giving him this rattle drum.

Ji Han intoned: “A rattle drum.”

Zhao Jian Gue nodded his head.

Ji Han: “Just what do you mean by this?”

Zhao Jian Gue: “What?”

Ji Han suddenly became angry again.

“GET OUT.” Ji Han ordered darkly, “This Venerable One is not three years old!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

This guy sure was mercurial.

He headed out with his head downcast.

Ji Han shouted suddenly: “COME BACK!”

Zhao Jian Gue felt wronged and grievingly turned around once more.

Ji Han looked at him blankly, before raising his palm towards him.

Ji han: “Leave the candied haws, you get out.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

55

Zhao Jian Gue didn’t understand just what it was he’d done wrong. He’d never said Ji Han was three years old, why would he think that way?

He really wasn’t able to conceive the answer.

Zhao Jian Gue walked to the outside of the exterior courtyard, taking in the sight of Enforcer Flower standing underneath a tree, smiling at him.

Zhao Jian Gue asked her: “Where did Xiao Lin go?”

He had a chest full of questions, all of which he needed Xiao Lin to answer.

Instead of answering, Enforcer Flower asked him back: “How is the Sect Leader?”

Zhao Jian Gue sighed heavily: “I don’t understand.”

Enforcer Flower: “You don’t understand what?”

Zhao Jian Gue answered: “Your Sect Leader is a bit too moody.”

Enforcer Flower laughed heartily.

Zhao Jian Gue wrinkled his brows at her, intoning: “What are you laughing at?”

Enforcer Flower: “I’m laughing at two little fools.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “Little fools?”

Enforcer Flower: “Not only is the Sect Leader not angry but he’s actually very happy, Ecstatic even.”

Zhao Jian Gue couldn’t help being startled by what she said.

What is that supposed to mean?

Enforcer Flower: “Gongzi Zhao, there is a matter that I’m sorry I have to burden you with informing the Sect Leader.”

Zhao Jian Gue asked: “What matter?”

Enforcer Flower: “Lord Wei of the Flying Eagle Court has arrived at the base of the mountain waiting to be summoned by Sect Leader.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “That guy from before……Wei San Er?”

Enforcer Flower smiled slightly: “Didn’t expect Gongzi Zhao to remember the guy. His name is Wei Qi. Amidst the 74 lords in the Sect, he is ranked number three.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “So you guys call him Wei San* Er.”

Enforcer Flower nodded her head.

Zhao Jian Gue asked: “Ji Han is just inside, why don’t you tell him yourself?”

Enforcer Flower: “Sect Leader was just on the pinnacle of fury, I’m not brave enough.”

Zhao Jian Gue was even more confused now: “Didn’t you just say… …”

“That is in regards to you, not to us,” Enforcer Flower blinked her lashes at him a few times. “I don’t want to go in there for a scolding.”

*San = Three

56

Zhao Jian Gue could only once more walk back into Ji Han’s residential court.

Ji Han had already returned to his bedroom, sitting at his table while staring pensively at the stick of candied haws in his hand.

Zhao Jian Gue alerted his presence by asking loudly: “Are you not intending to eat it?”

He didn’t expect Ji Han to get startled by him.

“When did you come back in?” Ji Han intoned, “How come I didn’t hear anything?”

Zhao Jian Gue’s forehead wrinkled slightly: “What were you thinking about so intensely? How come you couldn’t even hear my footsteps?”

For a martial artist, this was really quite abnormal.

Ji Han: “I… …”

He lowered his head, presumably not willing to finish that statement.

Zhao Jian Gue feared he would once more become inexplicably angry so he stayed at the door, a fair distance away, as he said: “Enforcer Flower asked me to pass a message to you, she said Lord Wei of the Flying Eagle Court has arrived at the base of the mountain, awaiting to be summoned.”

Ji Han: “How come she didn’t come in herself to tell me?”

Zhao Jian Gue: “She was afraid you’d get angry.”

Ji Han: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue carefully asked: “You… …you are really angry still?”

Ji Han remained silent for a while before suddenly, furiously declaring: “You’ve made this Venerable One lose all of his dignity!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “Huh?”

Ji Han: “Those people all have big mouths, if what they heard today gets passed into the martial world… …”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

He suddenly thought of the story he’d fabricated about the Two Heroes of Mobei and Bashan Hero.

Ji Han: “Perhaps after a few more days, everyone in the martial world will know that you and I… …”

He couldn’t finish that statement.

Zhao Jian Gue thought about this carefully. He theorized that all those people didn’t actually know of his identity; he hadn’t heard a single one of them call out his full name.

Zhao Jian Gue hurriedly tried to comfort Ji Han: “You can relax, none of them know who I am.”

Ji Han’s complexion seemingly got even worst.

Ji Han: “That’s even worse, I’m afraid that in a few more days a new rumor will spread across the martial world.”

Zhao Jian Gue didn’t understand: “What rumor?”

“The newly appointed Demon Sect Leader while young and inexperienced—” Ji Han seethed through gritting teeth, “has already reared his own male pet.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue still didn’t understand.

The two scenarios didn’t seem that different in his head, why was Ji Han so incensed by the second one.

He couldn’t resist asking exactly that.

Ji Han answered him: “Of course it’s different!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “How so?”

“… …it just is different,” Ji Han replied evasively, suddenly increasing his volume to intone: “You… …you just said who was at the base of the mountain?”

Zhao Jian Gue answered: “I heard Lord Wei of the Flying Eagle Court.”

Ji Han summoned the guards from outside of the door, asking them to bring forth Wei Qi.

Afterwards, the two people sat dumbfounded together, feeling rather awkward.

Thankfully Wei Qi came quickly.

He’d been waiting at the foot of the mountain for a while now so when he was summoned he eagerly ran up.

Wei Qi’s gaze fell on Ji Han, stepping forward to carefully examine him for a bit before finally speaking.

Wei Qi intoned vehemently: “So you’re this kind of Sect Leader!”

Ji Han was surprised: “… …what?”

“Who would have thought that you would like men,” Wei Qi looked rather depressed, “How come you didn’t consider this subordinate first?!”

Ji Han: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Wei Qi continued: “You and I have known each other for years and yet I can’t compare to someone you’ve barely known for just a few days-”

Before he even finished, Ji Han had interrupted him.

“Lord Wei,” Ji Han stated, “Don’t forget your official business.”

Wei Qi was deeply aggrieved, murmuring: “So Sect Leader likes this type of stuffy boring gourd…”

Ji Han angrily exclaimed: “Wei Qi!”

Wei Qi hurriedly laughed, indicating he was joking, before stating: “Sect Leader can relax, upon my return I too have also brought a lover back.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Ji Han glared at him.

Wei Qi turned to address him personally: “Sect Leader, come, I will speak with you about official sect matters.”

Ji Han inhaled sharply, the two chatted some superficial sect business, Zhao Jian Gue listened and was finding it rather boring when Ji Han suddenly said to him: “I should take my medication now.”

Zhao Jian Gue was a bit taken aback but quickly recovered.

Ji Han wanted to usher him away.

He wasn’t after all a member of the Demon Sect –if they wanted to discuss some confidential sect matters then naturally Zhao Jian Gue shouldn’t be around to listen.

Zhao Jian Gue nodded, replying: “I’ll go retrieve the medicine for you.”

Though he walked out the door he still had a stratagem.

The Demon Sect confidential matters would undoubtedly have something to do with the Righteous Sects.

He worried that something had happened to the Hao Ran League, or that the Demon Sect was planning something against the league, so after walking out of the residence, he secretively snuck back in, hiding under the canopy of a large courtyard tree.

Ji Han’s martial arts were still slightly inferior to his after all; if he were to carefully conceal his inner qi, Ji Han would be unable to detect him.

And indeed he ended up hearing the two discuss about the Hao Ran League.

The one speaking currently was Wei Qi.

“The martial arts conference will be held in two months,” Wei Qi explained, “In Bai Cang City.”

Ji Han didn’t reply.

Wei Qi continued: “At that time, all the important figures of the Righteous Sects will be present. The master of Bai Cang’s division has already set everything up, they plan on gathering at Bai Cang Cliffs. Beneath the mountain is a hidden passageway that leads straight to the apex.”

Ji Han faintly stated: “This Venerable One understands.”

Wei Qi: “When they hold martial conference, we’ll plant several traps on the summit… …”

Suddenly, outside the door, came the sound of footsteps.

Someone was coming.

Zhao Jian Gue could only rush out of the courtyard, landing at the perimeter before turning back around. The new arrival turned out to be the Head Maid bringing tea.

Zhao Jian Gue thought it over, Ji Han had just asked him to bring medication over, if he took too long in returning, then that might arouse Ji Han’s suspicions.

He hurriedly went out, his mind in a frantic mess.

The Demon Sect was indeed planning on accosting the Hao Ran League.

No matter how close he got to Ji Han, the boy in the end was still the sect leader of an evil sect.

Although he knew this all along, now that it was finally time to confront the matter, Zhao Jian Gue felt, for some reason, forlorn.

57

Doctor Yan was in the midst of brewing the medication.

He didn’t like people watching him with patients or when he was brewing medicine. Doctor Yan had gotten up early in the morning to start cooking with a fan over a stove until now. When he heard Zhao Jian Gue coming in, the young man didn’t even greet him and just raised his eyes slightly to acknowledge his presence.

Zhao Jian Gue spoke: “I’m here to retrieve the medicine.”

Doctor Yan: “Not ready yet.”

Zhao Jian Gue asked: “How much time is left?”

Doctor Yan: “Soon.”

Zhao Jian Gue had no choice but to wait.

He knew that he had to get in touch with Xiao Lin as soon as possible so that the boy could pass on a message to the Han Ran League. They could not let the Demon Sect’s plan come to fruition.

The medication still wasn’t ready.

Zhao Jian Gue felt deeply restless, really wanting to talk to someone. He suddenly recalled that Doctor Yan had come from the Medicinal Heaven Valley, meaning he could very well be disciple brothers with his Third Shimei’s husband. Zhao Jian Gue parted his lips to ask: “Doctor Yan, I heard that you hail from the Medicinal Heaven Valley?”

Doctor Yan spared him a glance, not saying anything.

Zhao Jian Gue asked: “Who was your teacher?”

Doctor Yan finally brought forth the medication.

Zhao Jian Gue: “Are you related to your sect’s famous medic Mo Qing Feng?”

Doctor Yan raised his head to glare at him with a fierce gaze, seething: “Stay out of my affairs.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Doctor Yan suddenly retreated one step back, lowering his gaze while saying softly: “The medication has finished brewing.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue could only leave with the medicine.

He followed the path back, soon seeing that Wei Qi had already left.

Xiao Lin and the Head Maid stood outside the door together. Zhao Jian Gue was naturally unable to openly discuss what he wanted with Xiao Lin and so he walked past the boy to step into the room. Ji Han sat at the table, brows wrinkling at him as he asked what took him so long to come back.

Zhao Jian Gue answered: “The medicine needed a bit longer to brew.”

His heart had settled quite a bit since when he’d first heard what he heard. Currently, he didn’t know what to say to Ji Han. He could only silently pass over that bowl of dark medicine, sitting down next to him to watch him drink it.

Ji Han took a sip and immediately his temple wrinkled into a mess. He pursed his lips, waited a long while before pitifully murmuring: “So bitter.”

Zhao Jian Gue sighed.

“Even if the medicine’s bitter you still have to drink it,” Zhao Jian Gue kept a straight face, saying, “Not allowed to toss it.”

Ji Han ‘hmphed’ softly, before taking another sip, and then whispering: “I’m not afraid of bitter and I didn’t intend to throw it out.”

Zhao Jian Gue sighed again, saying: “Finish the medicine and I’ll go buy candied haws for you.”

Ji Han choked on a mouthful of medicine. With tears in his eyes, he coughed for a long time before angrily declaring: “You are not allowed to go down the mountain anymore!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Ji Han seemed realize that the air had become awkward and hurriedly said: “This Venerable One is not afraid of bitter things!”

Zhao Jian Gue responded: “You should finish that medicine first.”

Ji Han fell silent, then stared at that bowl of medicine. Gritting his teeth, he down the contents in one gulp.

JZG couldn’t help smiling a bit, praising him in a low voice: “Indeed you’re a really brave little he-… …devil.”

Ji Han: “… …”

Suddenly, Xiao Lin and the Head Maid’s suppressed laughter came sounding from outside.

“What are you laughing at!” Ji Han angrily shouted, “Laugh anymore and go on your own to the Torture Hall to have your own tongue pulled out!”

Outside immediately quieted.

Ji Han turned his head and saw that Zhao Jian Gue seemed to be lightly laughing too.

The man’s laugh was suppressed and was harder to detect. Ji Han was shocked for a moment before ended up glaring at him again.

Ji Han asked: “Do you want to go to the Torture Hall too!?”

Zhao Jian Gue stopped laughing too, though he still seemed rather chipper.

Here it was! FINALLY!

How many days have passed since he was able to match a scenario up to the script book?

Xiao Lin was unable to give him a new booklet from the Hao Ran Elders and he’d been fearing that he’d run out of things to say soon!

“I don’t want to go to the Torture Hall,” Zhao Jian Gue slowly explained: “I only want to go to your ‘Torture Hall’.”

58

Ji Han didn’t understand what Zhao Jian Gue meant at all, only frowning at him intuitively in reply. After a bit when he recovered, Ji Han angrily shouted: “You’re messing with me again!”

Zhao Jian Gue mentally wondered how exactly he was messing with him. It clearly was that nonsense script. Who knew what those martial Elders experienced in life to be able to come up with this shit, but he was afraid of revealing too much in his expression, so he could only acclimate to fit the speech, showing an affectionate enamored look as he maintained gazes with Ji Han.

He had long since understood Ji Han’s temperament, knowing that like all young people, the boy had very thin skin. After hearing such a shameless statement, the boy would not be able to respond.

Ji Han met his eyes, and indeed seemed unable to reply.

He sat blankly for a moment, getting more unnerved the more he thought, unable to stop the blush that was on the verge of his cheeks. He hurriedly said to Zhao Jian Gue in a stern tone: “You can get out, I want to rest.”

Zhao Jian Gue really wanted to tease him some but he ultimately feared provoking the boy’s anger again and so he just stood up quietly before walking out.

Ji Han suddenly called out to him: “Doctor Yan said I should walk around for these next few days.”

Zhao Jian Gue stopped in his steps and looked back at the boy, not understanding either medicine or the boy’s meaning he only waited for the boy to continue talking.

But Ji Han didn’t say anything else and the two just stared at each other for a long awkward pause. Ji Han suddenly got angry, admonishing: “You’re so dense!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …huh?”

Ji Han had already looked away, gesturing him out.

Zhao Jian Gue was at a complete loss as he walked out -at the same time, Ji Han summoned the Head Maid, when she crossed paths with Zhao Jian Gue, she shot him a frustrated/exasperated look.

Zhao Jian Gue became even more confused!

He watched the Head Maid enter the room and exchanged glances with Xiao Lin. The boy said aloud: “Hero Zhao, this humble servant will escort you back.”

Inside the room, Ji Han naturally heard those words and didn’t do anything to stop it.

After both of them returned to Zhao Jian Gue’s room, and they both made sure that no one had followed them, Zhao Jian Gue finally told Xiao Lin what he had heard before.

Xiao Lin paled in fright: “Zhao Jian Gue, this matter I’ll immediately report this back to the Hao Ran League.”

Zhao Jian Gue felt deep consternation in his heart, unable to think of what to say.

Xiao Lin continued speaking: “Hero Zhao, you can rest assured, I will pay special attention to the Demon Sect’s paperwork in regards to this matter.”

Zhao Jian Gue nodded.

Xiao Lin contemplated for a bit, then flashed an uncomfortable expression, speaking: “It’s just this matter is rather confidential, and I imagine that the Sect Leader will keep the map to the secret passage very hidden. If the Hao Ran League were to suffer this assault… …”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …I will be vigilant on my side too.”

Xiao Lin tightly held onto Zhao Jian Gue’s hand: “Hero Zhao! The Hao Ran League is completely dependent on you!”

Zhao Jian Gue didn’t answer.

In his mind he rallied himself by thinking about how important the map was; if he could find the documentation to the hidden passage then he could save hundreds of lives in the Hao Ran League.

Never mind chivalry, he inherently had to do this.

But once the Hao Ran League found out about the Demon Sect strategy, would they arrange a counterstrike?

If that were to happen, who would save all the innocent lives of the Demon Sect?

He had no idea which side to choose.

… …

With their conversation over, Xiao Lin got ready to leave.

He walked to the door, before suddenly rushing back to him.

“Hero Zhao! There’s another matter,” Xiao Lin spoke evasively, “There’s another matter I have to discuss with you!”

Zhao Jian Gue asked: “What’s the matter?”

Xiao Lin hesitated before speaking: “Hero Zhao, the statement the Sect Leader said just now…was most likely inviting you to walk with him every day.”

Zhao Jian Gue suddenly understood.

Xiao Lin said again: “Hero Zhao, you have to carefully seize every opportunity!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …okay, I’ll be more diligent.”

Xiao Lin continued: “This sect has some secrets that even I’m unable to get into. The Demon Sect’s territory is vast and complicated. If Hero Zhao can get Ji Han to take you on a tour and you can draw out a topographical map then it’ll be very beneficial on the day that the Hao Ran League invades.”

Zhao Jian Gue did not answer.

Xiao Lin seemed to have noticed something was wrong, so he shyly, carefully asked: “Hero Zhao, you cannot forget your true identity.”

Zhao Jian Gue expression cooled significantly, intoning: “You don’t have to say anymore. What I have to remember I naturally will remember.”

Xiao Lin nodded in acknowledgment.

He hurriedly left, leaving only Zhao Jian Gue alone in the room.

The Hao Ran League and Xiao Lin really wasted no energy to support his efforts in deceiving Ji Han.

Zhao Jian Gue’s heart was just a chaotic mess.

How could he possibly forget that he was a hero in the martial arts world? This entire scheme was concocted by them beforehand.

He suddenly heard someone coming from outside the door.

“Gongzi Zhao, Sect Leader has something to say to your respected self.”

This voice belonged to the Head Maid. Zhao Jian Gue walked to the door, opened it and came face to face with the gleefully smiling Head Maid.

“The Sect Leader wants you to go to him every morning,” the Head Maid said excitedly, “To walk with him through the sect.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Why were all young people so thin-skinned? Just now why didn’t he say anything when he had the chance? Now he had to have someone else pass the word for him.

The Head Maid maintained her smile while blinking eagerly at him: “Hero Zhao, the Sect Leader really likes your respected self.”

Zhao Jian Gue furrowed his brows slightly.

“I understand,” he whispered softly, “You can tell him that I’ll be there.”

59

Next morning, Zhao Jian Gue indeed went to find Ji Han. He happened to be in the study dealing with official sect business with the Head Maid waiting outside when Zhao Jian Gue arrived. She smiled at him and said: “Gongzi Zhao, Sect Leader is inside.”

Zhao Jian Gue nodded, opening the door to step through.

Ji Han was just stuffing something underneath the desk. The official paperwork were piled to mountain lengths in front of him, undoubtedly accumulated during his days out sick.

Ji Han looked up at him with a very peaceful normal expression. “You’re here.”

Zhao Jian Gue pretended as if he hadn’t seen anything, and asked with a smile, “Do your bandages still have to be changed for today?”

Ji Han nodded: “Yes, I’ve already instructed Xiao Lin to bring forth Doctor Yan, you can sit here for now.”

Zhao Jian Gue sat down then in front of Ji Han. Not long after, Xiao Lin brought Doctor Yan over.

The study was naturally not a suitable place to change bandages. The Head Maid went with Doctor Yan and Ji Han over to the Sect Leader’s nearby bedroom. Xiao Lin also followed, remembering to shoot Zhao Jian Gue a gaze before he left.

Zhao Jian Gue naturally understood his expression.

He stayed in the study, not making any move to leave and yet no one acted to force him out; they all regarded him as an intimate person to the Sect Leader. When there was no one left in the study, he hurriedly stepped over to Ji Han’s work desk.

He’d clearly just seen Ji Han hiding something under the table.

Zhao Jian Gue had become famous at a young age, had been traversing across the martial world for more than ten years now and naturally was pretty familiar with hidden compartments, so after scrutinizing around the desk for a bit, he found there was a hidden slot in the table’s legs, with a small roll of paper stuffed inside. It looked like it’d just been retrieved off of a carrier pigeon’s legs.

This note stated exactly where the hidden passage in the mountain pass was.

Zhao Jian Gue hurriedly reviewed the note’s contents several times over, memorizing it silently.

He worried about Ji Han or anyone else returning early so he quickly replaced everything to its original position, rushed back to his seat; his heart deeply unsettled.

It felt like there were two people vehemently fighting each other inside his heart; one person felt what he was doing was incredibly wrong, the other felt his actions were justified in heroism.

He was still deeply disturbed when Ji Han returned.

“Sit for a while longer,” Ji Han instructed, “After I finish processing this paperwork I ask you to accompany me on a stroll.”

Ji Han’s mood seemed very good today; even the tone he used embodied a slight sense of high spiritedness.

Zhao Jian Gue nodded, just feeling even more guilt in his heart.

By the time Ji Han finished his work and had taken his medicine, it was already the afternoon.

They ate lunch together and then went for a stroll around the courtyard because Ji Han’s injuries didn’t foster walking long distances.

Before arriving her, Zhao Jian Gue had always thought the Demon Sect was a frightening abhorrent place, but now he could see that their gardens were even more beautiful than the ones at the Hao Ran League.

The two silently strolled for a bit before Ji Han finally asked him a question.

Ji Han: “What’s up with you these past two days?”

Zhao Jian Gue: “I… …”

Ji Han furrowed his brows, intoning: “If someone in the sect has spoken badly of you, let me know.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

He knew that Ji Han had the wrong idea but he didn’t know how to go about correcting him.

No matter what he couldn’t speak the truth and so he had no choice but to change topics.

“What happened to those assassins?” Zhao Jian Gue asked, “Have you figured out who sent them over?”

Ji Han’s expression became heavy: “Elder Wen insisted on personally interrogating them and with his connections I was unable to overrule him.”

Zhao Jian Gue already had much suspicion for Elder Wen but no hearing Ji Han say this, his suspicion spawned into anxiety: “Letting him interrogate? This… …he’s not really someone you trust, right? ”

Ji Han returned: “You can relax, I’ve let Enforcer Flower follow this matter as well, and now that Wei Qi has also returned, the two will definitely be able to come out with the truth.” Thinking on his next words, Ji Han finally added: “Enforcer Flower and Wei Qi both people I deeply trust.”

Zhao Jian Gue replied: “The important thing is to find out the truth as soon as possible.”

Ji Han continued: “I already instructed the man yesterday. In a bit, we’ll go together to ask Wei Qi about his progress.”

Zhao Jian Gue could only nod his head.

Ji Han thought for a bit again, before speaking once more: “Come, I’m taking you to a place.”

60

Zhao Jian Gue didn’t expect Ji Han to bring him to this place.

Before his vision were shelves and shelves filled with the memorial plaques of past deceased Sect Leaders for the Demon Sect. In the middle of the altar was an incense burner. The light in the room was dim, the air filled with a fog of lingering smoke.

Zhao Jian Gue wasn’t sure what to say so he could only with a shut mouth for Ji Han to speak.

Ji Han looked over the shelves, suddenly intoning; “My adoptive father is also up there.”

Zhao Jian Gue asked: “Why did you bring me here?”

“No reason,” Ji Han answered, “Just suddenly wanted to. It’d been awhile since I came here to burn incense for them anyway.”

He indeed lit a stick, walked to the altar, and kowtowed three times.

Zhao Jian Gue felt deeply awkward in this current scenario: though the saying was to not speak ill of the dead, all of these people were still in the end Demon Sect leaders. He would never bow his head to any of them. None of the past leaders were as kind or soft hearted as Ji Han; compared to them, the boy was practically a kitten with an ill temper.

Fortunately, Ji Han didn’t intend for him to bow.

He stood there silently for a bit, before suddenly speaking:

“Half of these sect leaders died at the hands of the Righteous Sects,” then after saying that, he seemed to fear Zhao Jian Gue getting the wrong idea, so he quickly added: “I’m not the unreasonable type of person. I know that several Righteous Sect members have also died at the hands of the Demon Sect.”

Zhao Jian Gue intoned: “I understand.”

Ever since ancient times, the fight between these two forces has never changed.

Ji Han continued: “Ever since I was little, my adoptive father has instilled a philosophy in me.”

Zhao Jian Gue asked: “What philosophy?”

Ji Han: “[In the martial world, anything for survival is justified.]”

Zhao Jian Gue had naturally heard of this idiom before.

As a matter of fact, he couldn’t even count how many people he’d heard speak of this phrase before.

The martial world was not a carefree place.

Zhao Jian Gue contemplated the reason Ji Han brought this phrase up. He probably wanted Zhao Jian Gue to understand after the attack on the Hao Ran League occurred; wanted Zhao Jian Gue to understand that the attack was not something he wanted to do but had to do as Sect Leader.

Zhao Jian Gue felt his words applied to himself as well. Didn’t it rationalize everything he did as well? He didn’t know how to reply for a while, ruminated for a long while before finally squeezing out a sentence: “Your life’s direction is decided by yourself.”

Ji Han asked him in return: “In your entire life, you’ve never been forced to do a single thing that you weren’t willing to do?”

Zhao Jian Gue couldn’t say anything to that.

“If that is indeed the case, then I am deeply envious,” Ji Han answered, “I’ve never lived my life for myself.”

Zhao Jian Gue asked: “Why do you say that?”

Ji Han turned his head around to say: “Come on, let’s go and see Wei Qi.”

How to Incorrectly Ensnare a Demon Sect’s Leader (Ch 41-50)

论如何错误地套路一个魔教教主 by 一只大雁

41

Zhao Jian Gue had seen Ji Han’s sword before.

Having seen the man practice a few steps here and there, he was quite familiar with the foundation of Ji Han’s swordplay.

He had also heard down the martial arts grapevine the way Ji Han’s sword worked.

If any one of them were fighting one on one with Ji Han, none of them would surely be the boy’s match; even one vs two, Ji Han still very likely would be able to win. However, if all three attacked at once, and added in some underhanded tricks, Ji Han might be able to severely injure one or two but he would unavoidably receive some serious wounds himself.

They came here to take the boy’s life. In the end, if Ji Han were to lose at all, he would most likely lose his life.

Si Gai suddenly said with great regret “Sect Leader Ji, if you don’t struggle, you can die pretty painlessly.”

Ji Han looked at him coldly, not answering.

Si Gai could only sigh. “What a pity.”

Xu Jingying’s brows furrowed into a deep crease, absolutely disgusted. “(Being protective and tender)* to this guy? Before murdering someone can you not be so nauseating?!”

Si Gai had no choice but to shut up.

Zhao Jian Gue was even more worried now.

Lots of young people tended to overestimate their own capabilities/strength. He feared this would apply to Ji Han.

If he doesn’t overestimate himself then Ji Han should know that this forthcoming battle was an inevitable loss for him.

Since this was the case, why would he proceed with it anyway?

Is he planning on just delaying time until the Demon Sect guards came around?

Zhao Jian Gue really could not understand.

Now was an inopportune to really think of these matters.

Though Zhao Jian Gue’s sword was not at his side, he could still use other nearby things to improvise.

Even if he had to use just his bare hands, he would protect Ji Han’s life.

Crutches Sun suddenly laughed creepily, intoning: “Then let’s not waste any more time. Sect Leader Ji, draw your blade!”

Ji Han still would not speak.

His sword somehow already came into his palm without anyone noticing.

Crutches Sun’s weapon was his pair of iron crutches, Xu Jingying’s was a long sword, while Si Gai’s weapon was a long whip.

Ji Han’s sword only just unsheathed before a long whip came lashing down towards Ji Han’s skull. Just now Si Gai had addressed Ji Han in a very tender affectionate manner and yet now that he was making his move, his actions carried only vicious savagery, as if the Sect Leader was his most hated foe.

Xu Jingying and Crutches Sun also attacked at the same time.

Zhao Jian Gue’s heart was lodged at his throat by this point.

The Head Maid had him protected safely behind herself, as if he was a patient on the verge of death –he was just about to push away the Head Maid when Crutches Sun’s iron crutch suddenly pivoted from the side and came whirling at him!

In comparison to everyone else, the Head Maid’s martial prowess was really nothing to brag about. Additionally, in her hands were only a soft sword that would not be able to defend against this strike.

Zhao Jian Gue yanked her arm back to let her successfully evade the iron crutch.

Crutches Sun suddenly howled.

“Zhao Jian Gue!” He screamed at the top of his lungs, “Take this next strike head on!”

Zhao Jian Gue’s heart immediately quickened –knowing what Crutches Sun was trying to do and indeed, the second after the man finished speaking, Ji Han’s composed offense seemed to falter, a second before his blade retracted towards them.

His sword plays were all offense with no defense, no path left for retreat –with this one strike abruptly half executed-half withdrawn- Ji Han suddenly felt the qi inside his chest swell into disarray; his vision darkening.

Si Gai naturally would not let such an opportune moment pass; his whip was longer than Xu Jingying’s sword so as soon as Ji Han turned his attention away, a long violent lash slammed into Ji Han’s back. Crutches Sun’s iron cane suddenly turned around to land heavily onto the boy’s chest too.

Even though he used the last bit of his qi to protect his heart, Ji Han was still seriously injured by this strike, vomiting a plume of blood before falling to his knees on the ground  his sword the only thing propping himself up.

Turns out Crutches Sun’s move was just a feint towards Zhao Jian Gue; they had already studied the intricacies of Ji Han’s swordplay before and wanted exactly just to force him to retreat, taking advantage of the qi disruption to attack him at his weakest.

The corner of Crutches Sun’s lips quirked up.

Their plan really was well executed, even the Demon Sect Leader was no match for them.

Before he finished a full smile however, the man suddenly felt a painful sensation he’d never experienced before.

He lowered his head to see a sword pierced through his abdomen and exiting through his back.

Ji Han’s blade.

Crutches Sun stared in awestruck at Ji Han; his mind was filled with a desire to smash this boy’s face in with the iron cane but his hands would not obey.

Crutches Sun collapsed.

Ji Han had used the last of his energy with that strike.

Xu Jingying’s sword was about to hit.

Zhao Jian Gue didn’t even have time to think, grabbing the soft sword out of the Head Maid’s hand, he swung it towards Xu Jingying’s wrist.

In order to avoid the soft sword, Xu Jingying had no choice but to shift her strike to the side, missing Ji Han.

Zhao Jian Gue actually didn’t really know how to use a soft sword, he just wielded it as a bluff. Xu Jingying didn’t know his inexperience with such a weapon and naturally was apprehensive of any move from him because of his title.

By now, the Head Maid had lost all the blood in her face from fright.

She moved hurriedly to Ji Han’s side, quickly sealed several meridian points on the boy’s body before feeding several emergency healing pills she’d taken out from her waist pack.

Ji Han remained unconscious.

Si Gai and Xu Jingying hadn’t expected Zhao Jian Gue would actually interrupt.

With Crutches Sun dead, even as two against Zhao Jian Gue, they were still facing some trouble.

Xu Jingying suddenly angrily shouted at Si Gai, inquiring: “Didn’t you say Zhao Jian Gue was physically ill?! LIAR!”

Si Gai frowned, feeling aggrieved. “All of the Demon Sect’s servants said as such! I don’t really know why…unless…unless…”

His gaze shifted towards the unconscious Ji Han, as if reaching an epiphany.

This place was the Demon Sect, the gossip passed around the servants here naturally would be focused primarily on their master.

“I get it now,” Si Gai nodded grimly, “The one physically ill was Sect Leader Ji.”

怜香惜玉 = Idiom meaning being kind/protective/tender to women but can be used for just any one you are interested in

42

Though the two assassins argued incessantly, their gazes never once left Zhao Jian Gue’s person.

Crutches Sun was dead but neither of the two showed any degree of sadness.

Assassins naturally should be so coldhearted.

They eyed Zhao Jian Gue like a hawk, apprehensive for the man’s next move.

Zhao Jian Gue was filled with a myriad of thoughts right now.

He and Xiao Lin were here to deceive Ji Han for the sake of the Hao Ran League but even if the boy was successfully fooled, Zhao Jian Gue never expected him to actually offer up his life in protection of his ‘physically unwell’ self.

Such a responsible and compassionate Demon Sect Leader had to be the only one of his kind.

He put down the Head Maid’s soft sword.

Since he didn’t know how to wield it, the weapon was of no use for him.

Ji Han’s sword was still lodged diagonally through Crutches Sun’s abdomen.

After he’d stabbed the man, Ji Han hadn’t even the energy to pull the weapon out.

Zhao Jian Gue felt something ignite in his chest and heart, causing his mind to race chaotically. Only after grabbing the hilt of the sword did he feel his mind calm down, little by little.

Compared to his own blade, Ji Han’s was narrower, longer, and lighter in weight.

Nevertheless, it felt very comfortable in his hands.

This was a good blade.

His mind had completely calmed down by now.

Si Gai and Xu Jingying realized that something was not right.

Even if Ji Han was still alive, they could always retreat and try again –they didn’t have to risk their lives by putting all of their eggs in one basket…even if they managed to keep their lives, losing a limb or two would not fare well for their futures.

Xu Jingying spoke: “Hero Zhao, if the three of us were to fight, we will all inevitably get hurt, how about if we all took one step back-”

“No need for the excess words,” Zhao Jian Gue held Ji Han’s sword, his heart’s intention clear as water, “I will definitely not let you guys leave.”

Xu Jingying countered: “But-“

Zhao Jian Gue frigidly ordered: “Draw your blade!”

43

Elder Wen of the Demon Sect had finally arrived, bringing with him finally reinforcements.

Xu Jingying had suffered severe injuries while Si Gai was practically at the end of his rope.

The Demon Sect arrested both assassins as Elder Wen walked over to Zhao Jian Gue’s side, flashing a concerned inquiring look.

“Hero Zhao,” he asked, “Is your respected self, okay?”

Zhao Jian Gue’s right shoulder had suffered a blow from Xu Jingying’s sword and though it was a shallow wound, the blood from it speckled his entirely white ensemble, making it look more severe than it actually was.

Elder Wen said, “These two people shall be imprisoned and handled in accordance to the Demon Sect, hopefully Hero Zhao will not voice any objections?”

Zhao Jian Gue observed him closely, slight unease filling his being.

In the end, he nodded his head without saying anything. Elder Wen turned to look at Ji Han, saying: “Rest assured Hero Zhao, I’ll go and have someone send over Doctor Yan right away.”

Zhao Jian Gue originally wanted to inquire about Xiao Lin’s whereabouts -since retrieving his sword should not have taken such a long time- but this Elder Wen… … he really just found too strange to trust.

In the end, he didn’t say anything.

The Demon Sect reinforcements sealed the assassins’ qi points before taking them away. Additionally they cleared away the corpse of Crutches Sun as well as attending to the wounds of the dispatched guards stationed outside of Ji Han’s room.

Everything went a bit too methodically, as if the Demon Sect regularly had assassins coming about to kill and injure before being arrested.

Zhao Jian Gue didn’t want to speak to anyone.

The Head Maid still had an unsettled disposition positioned next to Ji Han. Zhao Jian Gue stepped over to pick up the scabbard from the ground, wiped the blade’s blood away before returning it into the sheath, and finally situating it next to Ji Han’s body.

Ji Han’s face was as pale as paper. Having vomited up blood, the corner of his lips was dotted with red remnants. Zhao Jian Gue crouched down and extended a hand out towards the man’s face, originally intending to wipe away the blood specks, but suddenly Zhao Jian Gue realized that in this courtyard was still several people with their gazes all trained on the two of them. What he originally planned to do might be seen as too affectionate so Zhao Jian Gue stiffly moved his hand up the boy’s nostrils, checking his consistent breaths, before exhaling a sigh of relief. Still alive.

Thankfully, he was still alive.

Zhao Jian Gue exhaled heavily.

He lifted his head to see the Head Maid watching him speechlessly.

Zhao Jian Gue felt that he was expected to say something here but put on the spot, nothing at all came to mind.

There was nothing in the script book about what to do should Ji Han become severely wounded.

Zhao Jian Gue could only awkwardly say, “You can rest assured, he will be fine.”

The Head Maid still remained speechless, watching him.

Now that statement sounded like he’d spoken it to reassure himself.

Zhao Jian Gue felt very awkward and embarrassed.

The Head Maid looked to her left and then her right, before suddenly whispering in a small voice: “Gongzi Zhao, you…I know you’re lying to the Sect Leader.”

Zhao Jian Gue felt his heart leap in shock, thinking the Head Maid had realized he was sent here to seduce the Demon Sect Leader.

The Head Maid continued: “You’re respected self isn’t at all unwell. Nothing happened at all last night.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “Uh… …”

So that’s what she was talking about… …

Zhao Jian Gue knitted his brows, carefully contemplated about how to deal with this new development.

The Head Maid sighed: “Your respected self can rest assured, I won’t say anything to the Sect Leader.”

Zhao Jian Gue flashed a confused look.

“I can tell you really love our Sect Leader,” the Head Maid explained, “Otherwise just now you wouldn’t have risked life and limb to protect the leader.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

There seemed to be some kind of misunderstanding here.

The Head Maid: “Just your method is all wrong. Loving someone means you need to be completely honest with them. Never mind this one small instance but please in the future do not continue lying to the leader.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

What does she mean by ‘never mind this one small instance’… … this was not a small lie but instead a really big lie!

The Head Maid continued: “Though Sect Leader won’t admit to it, I can tell after this incident that he really loves your respected self!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

“Gongzi Zhao.” The Head Maid clutched her handkerchief with a pair of glossy emotional eyes, “I wish both of you happiness!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

44

Doctor Yan was a young fellow.

While his age was not that much older than Ji Han, he loved to put up a stern, slightly belittling disposition, as if everyone owed him 8 million silver pieces.

But no matter what everyone still treated him with a respectful attitude.

He just squatted down, cursorily looked at Ji Han’s injuries before proclaiming dismissively: “Not gonna die.”

Zhao Jian Gue really didn’t like this guy.

Doctor Yan instructed people to carry Ji Han over to the boy’s bedroom for examination but then instructed that he didn’t like anyone watching him during practice so he kicked everyone else out of the room.

Zhao Jian Gue waited anxiously outside the door as several elders and branch leaders came over, bringing with them their allotted subordinates.

Enforcer Flower was the last one to arrive.

Amongst her subordinates were those that carried with them an unconscious Xiao Lin, requesting for Doctor Yan’s assistance.

“He got knocked out and thrown into a cave,” Enforcer Flower explained, “The patrolling guards found him while making rounds.”

Zhao Jian Gue stepped up to take a glance.

There indeed was a big lump on Xiao Lin’s scalp, but it was only a minor injury at most.

The guards stationed outside of Ji Han’s bedroom were all either mortally injured or killed. Jackdaw gave such cruel attention to the guards, how come towards Xiao Lin they showed such uncharacteristic mercy?

Zhao Jian Gue didn’t know if he was thinking too much, or if there really was something to unravel here.

… …

The room’s door opened.

Doctor Yan had just stepped out before being asked by Enforcer Flower to take a look at Xiao Lin’s injuries.

Zhao Jian Gue hurriedly rushed back into the room.

Ji Han’s breathing seemed to have stabilized quite a bit, though he had yet to awaken, but his composition looked better.

Zhao Jian Gue exhaled a breath of relief.

Though this Doctor Yan was quite annoying, his medical skills were at least top notch.

Ji Han needed peace and quiet so the Elders and Enforcers all left, but the gaze they all shot towards Zhao Jian Gue was really rather intriguing. After seeing all those odd gazes, Zhao Jian Gue felt rather embarrassed and quickly made to leave as well.

The Head Maid hurriedly stopped him.

Head Maid: “Gongzi Zhao, I already had people do some setting up, Gongzi Zhao can live here for the time being.”

Zhao Jian Gue was taken aback: “Setting up?”

The Head Maid kept a straight expression while nodding: “The chaise lounge.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

The Head Maid hesitated for a moment, then said: “Uh…unless Gongzi Zhao wants to sleep in Sect Leader’s bed?”

Zhao Jian Gue: “No…”

Head Maid continued: “Then Sect Leader is all in your hands now, Gongzi Zhao, if you have orders, speak to me or Xiao Lin and we’ll take care of it.”

He suddenly finally understood, the Head Maid intended for him to take care of Ji Han!

Speaking seriously, personally caring for him was a good opportunity for seduction.

But Zhao Jian Gue still had quite a bit of hesitancy.

The Head Maid continued speaking: “If when our Sect Leader wakes up to find Gongzi Zhao waiting diligently by his bedside, he’ll definitely be very pleased!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “I’ve never taken care of sick patients before… …”

Head Maid: “There’s a first for everything.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Head Maid: “With us helping you everything will go by smoothly.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “But… …”

But Ji Han had suffered such severe injuries, if he were to accidentally kill the guy while taking care of him, then what would he do?

The Head Maid saw how hesitant Zhao Jian Gue was and sighed in exasperation: “Gongzi Zhao.”

Zhao Jian Gue asked: “What?”

The Head Maid shot him a stern look: “Being human, you sometimes have to take the initiative to get the people you want.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

The Head Maid patted Zhao Jian Gue’s shoulder a couple times: “Opportunities don’t wait for people, Heaven rewards due diligence, [bask in difficulties and enjoy progress with the king]*!

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

与君共勉 = bask in difficulties and enjoy progress with the king, pretty literal translation, just means to work together through thick and thin,

45

Zhao Jian Gue didn’t know what to do right now.

Fortunately, Xiao Lin woke up after only a short while and he was able to inform the boy everything that had occurred.

The bump on his scalp had barely receded before the boy seemed energetic enough to run 180 laps with Zhao Jian Gue.

“What a good opportunity! Hero Zhao!” Xiao Lin exclaimed in a low volume, “This is a great opportunity!”

Zhao Jian Gue asked him: “This… …what should I do now?”

Without the script’s guidance, he suddenly felt deeply lost.

Xiao Lin: “In order to prevent you from getting injured, Sect Leader got injured himself! You should be very anxious right now!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

He was anxious to a degree but nowhere to the extent that Xiao Lin expected.

Xiao Lin: “If by the time Sect Leader wakes up he sees Hero Zhao waiting diligently at his side, having lost weight from restless malnourished days and nights guarding at his bedside, and finally collapsing in exhaustion as well…he’ll surely be very moved!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “This plan… …”

Xiao Lin exclaimed: “Hero Zhao! Have faith in me!”

Zhao Jian Gue tentatively put his faith in him.

Moving a chair over, Zhao Jian Gue sat down next to Ji Han’s bedside.

Sitting motionlessly at his side was really quite boring, so when Zhao Jian Gue saw that Ji Han was nowhere near waking, he closed his eyes to mentally recite [internal qi mantra]* in his head.

Right then it’d been early morning.

By the time night came around, and after taking some meals, Zhao Jian Gue still didn’t feel too sleepy so he returned back to Ji Han’s bedside. The Head Maid thought he was too worried and therefore unable to sleep, so she tried persuading him a couple of times but seeing that Zhao Jian Gue was determined not to rest, she secretively lit a tranquilizer incense stick.

Zhao Jian Gue knew nothing about incense and Ji Han’s room always had some sort of burning incense so he was completely unable to discern whatever it was that the Head Maid lit. After a bit, he felt slightly sleepy, by the middle of the night when the fragrance was at its most intense, Zhao Jian Gue casually slid headfirst into Ji Han’s bedside and fell asleep without realizing it.

He guessed that he had only slept for about an hour before he heard someone coughing at his side; Zhao Jian Gue opened his eyes and saw the morning light outside, turning his head, he saw that Ji Han was awake, though coughing nonstop, unable to speak.

The Head Maid and Xiao Lin heard the ruckus and hurriedly asked for Doctor Yan to come over, before the two entered the room, Zhao Jian Gue was at a loss in the moment. Seeing Ji Han cough so severely, he instinctively lifted him up to give his back a few pats.

He forgot that Ji Han still had a whiplash on his back.

The Head Maid wanted to stop him by calling out but it was already too late.

Zhao Jian Gue slapped Ji Han on his back, and though the force wasn’t too big, it still naturally was quite sore.

Ji Han inhaled sharply in pain, lifted his gaze intending to glare at the man but the movement only caused him to cough even more intensely.

Zhao Jian Gue thought: Oh crap, indeed I messed things up!

Just as he came to this realization, Ji Han had already coughed up a slew of blood.

Suddenly, Zhao Jian Gue was in instant panic.

He grasped onto Xiao Lin’s hand, rambled incoherently: “WHERE IS DOCTOR YAN?!”

Xiao Lin intoned: “He should be coming soon, Hero Zhao, don’t panic… …”

Zhao Jian Gue exclaimed in horror: “I slapped your Sect Leader into vomiting blood!”

The Head Maid didn’t panic or worry; she smoothly brought over a cup of hot water and slowly fed it to Ji Han. His coughing stopped as Doctor Yan arrived.

Yet again, all unnecessary personnel was forced out the door by him.

Zhao Jian Gue was completely unsettled.

In a frustrated tone, he whispered to Xiao Lin: “I messed things up!”

Xiao Lin comforted him: “Hero Zhao, you don’t have to be so self-blaming.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “Never mind being touched, Ji Han surely hates me now.”

Xiao Lin: “… …relax Hero Zhao, our Sect Leader is not so petty.”

Zhao Jian Gue just felt like his heart had been cremated: “What should I do now?”

Xiao Lin took out from his bosom a bag of pine nut candy**.

“Hero Zhao, please relax your respected self, I still have other plans,” his tone was rather relaxed, as if he was very assured, “Our Sect Leader loathes anything bitter, cannot stand to drink medicine. Take this packet of candy, wait for when he is about to take his medication and then offer this to him at the same time.”

Zhao Jian Gue embraced this last shred of hope with a face full of worry before accepting that bag of sugared pine nuts.

*Internal Qi Mantra = So, it’s similar to like a martial arts manual, every sect usually has their own internal qi mantra that teaches/cultivates qi differently than anyone else. Qi is used to power all martial arts, otherwise it would just be people swinging swords aimlessly.

**pine nut candy = 松子糖, look it up, try it if you can, it’s heavenly!!!!

Doctor Yan left a prescription, advised the Head Maid on what she needed to be cognizant of, before leaving. Ji Han’s physical foundation was good so it was estimated that he could get out of bed after just a few days, and that he would make a full recovery after just one month.

Zhao Jian Gue was still thoroughly downcast. In his heart, he could only recall the fact that he had slapped Ji Han into vomiting blood and could only feel deep aggravation.

He sat in the farthest corner away from the bed and watched as the Head Maid along with a servant girl fed Ji Han a bowl of white porridge; it wasn’t time for the medication yet so the girls moved to help Ji Han lie back down once more to rest.

Ji Han wasn’t willing however, he whispered something into the Head Maid’s ear, a moment later the woman came striding over with a meaningful look in her eyes as she spoke to Zhao Jian Gue: “Gongzi Zhao, Sect Leader Ji wants a word with your respected self.”

For a moment, Zhao Jian Gue thought he had heard wrong.

The Head Maid coldly intoned: “Gongzi Zhao, you can’t possibly expect the Sect Leader to come to you.”

Zhao Jian Gue finally stepped to him.

Ji Han’s countenance had already regained some of its color, though his lips were still quite white, alongside weakened breathing and speech.

Zhao Jian Gue couldn’t help feeling even more guilty.

If he just didn’t pretend to be sick then Ji Han would have never gotten injured, if he just didn’t slap the guy on the back then Ji Han would have never coughed up blood.

He’d basically messed up everything.

Ji Han met his eyes, slowly exhorted his name: “Zhao Jian Gue.”

Zhao Jian Gue hung his head in guilt.

Ji Han intoned: “I suffered a severe internal injury which would inevitably lead to coagulated blood in the chest.”

Zhao Jian Gue depressingly replied: “I should never have patted you.”

Ji Han: “The blood I spat out were the coagulated traces and not fresh blood that you brought forth.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Ji Han continued: “Nonetheless, your slap was still very painful.”

Ji Han said this statement in a calm manner, sans any malice or intention of getting angry.

Zhao Jian Gue: “It was my fault.”

“You don’t have to admit to fault,” Ji Han contemplated his next words, seemingly hesitant before stating, “You…how long has it been since you had a good night’s rest?”

Zhao Jian Gue was stunned.

Before he even had the chance to answer the Head Maid interjected with: “Ever since Sect Leader fell unconscious Gongzi Zhao has not decently rested his eyes.”

Ji Han’s expression became a bit complicated.

Zhao Jian Gue stated: “I rested.”

Ji Han: “He slept on the bed’s edge?”

Zhao Jian Gue said: “To martial arts experts, it’s really nothing.”

Ji Han crossed his brows before ordering for the Head Maid to clean and clear out the adjacent room.

“Since I’ve already awoken, you don’t need to stay here anymore,” Ji Han said to Zhao Jian Gue, “I’ve had them clear out the nearby room, go and have a decent rest.”

Zhao Jian Gue cradled the bag of pine nut candy inside his robes, thinking that the time for Ji Han’s medication hadn’t yet arrived, quickly saying: “No problem, I’ve already rested.”

Zhao Jian Gue did some careful calculations for a bit before saying: “More than one hour is really enough.”

Ji Han: “… …”

He stopped debating, as if feeling too tired.

The Head Maid had already pulled Zhao Jian Gue out the door.

“Gongzi Zhao, your respected self should go and rest first,” she explained, “Otherwise by the time the Sect Leader recovers then your respected self’s body will have collapsed in place.”

Zhao Jian Gue could only nod.

He retreated to the nearby bedroom, casually washed his face, and contemplated all the things that had occurred during these last two days, his mind feeling quite unsettled about Elder Wen’s behavior. Ji Han’s injuries were still fresh, the news could wait until after he recovered.

There was still the matter of the two assassins; he wasn’t sure how much the two could actually be forced to talk, figuring out the identity of who had hired them could prove difficult, and if the first attempt wasn’t successful then there might be a second attempt. If just one of the attempts was successful then what should he do?

Suddenly, someone knocked on his door.

Zhao Jian Gue recognized the little girl as one of Ji Han’s bedroom maids; the girl wore a light green dress, carrying in her hands an engraved box of food. Happily, she passed the box to him.

“Sect Leader heard that Gongzi Zhao has yet to eat anything so this humble servant was instructed to come over,” she blinked her eyes a few times, “The Sect Leader is unable to eat greasy foods lately so all these dishes are on the lighter side, he was unsure if Gongzi Zhao is willing to accept this selection?”

Zhao Jian Gue said: “Thank you.”

The little girl was in no hurry to leave: “Sect Leader also said that if Gongzi Zhao is unwilling with this current assortment then your respected self is able to make any special request to the kitchen. The kitchen maid is aptly skilled.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “I can eat this current selection.”

The little girl jumped excitedly before departing. Zhao Jian Gue opened the box to see a bowl of white porridge next to a few side dishes of vegetables and tofu. Indeed a light selection.

But this was specifically ordered and sent here by Ji Han.

Using the chopsticks provided, he picked up a bit of green vegetables and placed it in his mouth.

Judging by Ji Han’s attitude towards him today, Zhao Jian Gue knew he was close to successfully completing his mission.

He exhaled a deep sigh, not knowing why he couldn’t taste anything at all, like eating wax. Not in the least bit happy.

47

Zhao Jian Gue woke up early, after hearing that Ji Han had yet to awaken, he went alone to get breakfast. After practicing some martial arts exercises, he felt quite refreshed.

With his head’s swelling mostly receded, Xiao Lin excitedly ran up to him.

Xiao Lin: “Hero Zhao! The Sect Leader is awake! He’s about to take his medicine!”

Zhao Jian Gue felt deeply anxious as he ran to Ji Han’s bedroom.

All the servant maids knew about Zhao Jian Gue’s relationship with Ji Han, so they didn’t react at all to Hero Zhao as he burst into Ji Han’s bedroom –as if they had long since associated the sight of them together.

Ji Han had his hair down with his outer robe draped over his shoulders, saw him coming in, glanced over for a bit before returning his gaze back to the thick bowl of dark brewed medicinal broth in his hand.

He’d just barely made up his mind to take a sip before immediately furrowing his brows with a deep frown.

Seeing that he’d come at just the right time, Zhao Jian Gue quickly took out that bag of candied pine nuts, shouting: “JI HAN!”

Ji Han was startled nearly to the point of spilling all the medicine onto his bed.

“So early in the morning,” Ji Han shot him a frigid look, “What on earth are you shouting for?!”

Zhao Jian Gue coughed lightly. “It was my rude mistake.”

Ji Han took a small sip of medicine, not answering him.

Zhao Jian Gue inquired: “You’re taking your medicine now?”

Ji Han: “Yes.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “That medicine looks very bitter.”

Ji Han ignored him.

Zhao Jian Gue asked carefully: “Are…are you really afraid of bitter tasting things?”

I have an entire bag of pine nut candy!

He was ready to say that statement.

But Ji Han suddenly raised an eyebrow.

“What did you just say?” Ji Han frigidly intoned, “Who’s afraid of bitter taste? This Venerable one is not afraid of bitter things, not afraid at all!”

Zhao Jian Gue was completely dazed. “Huh?”

Ji Han coldly snorted, “Any REAL MAN wouldn’t be afraid of bitter things!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “That’s not what I-”

Ji Han had already turned around and chugged the entire bowl in one gulp.

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Why was this different than what Xiao Lin said… …

Ji Han covered his mouth with his palm with a pained expression, as he wanted to spit out everything that he’d just swallowed.

Zhao Jian Gue regained his composure after a bit, speaking carefully: “You…are you alright?”

Ji Han declared: “Of course this Venerable One is alright!”

After talking, he covered his lips again, face utterly pale.

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

… …young people really loved their pride.

Zhao Jian Gue silently put away the bag of pine nut candies.

48

Ji Han finally relaxed after a bit.

He kept murmuring again and again: “This Venerable One is not afraid of bitter, This Venerable One is not afraid of bitter.

Zhao Jian Gue felt this scenario was very familiar to him, just like when his master used to have to coax one of the young disciples into drinking medication. Nodding his head, he intoned casually: “Yes, you are indeed not afraid of bitter. Can be considered a little hero.”

Ji Han: “… …”

Ji Han: “Little hero?”

Zhao Jian Gue contemplated, thinking that perhaps the Demon Sect didn’t use this exact vocabulary to praise little kids so he added: “Little demon?”

Ji Han was dazed for a bit, before speaking: “Zhao Jian Gue you should also take some medication.”

Zhao Jian Gue answered smooth and quickly: “You’re my medicine.”

He said this without any hesitation or even a reddening of the cheeks.

Ji Han answered: “Shut up, who is your medicine. It’s not like this Venerable One can be consumed.”

Zhao Jian Gue suddenly remembered that long forgotten script book.

“Can’t be consumed?” He vehemently recalled the contents of the book, “Of course you can be consumed.”

Ji Han replied: “What are you raving about now?”

Zhao Jian Gue met his eyes, answering softly: “A feast for the eyes*.”

Ji Han: “… …”

Being so severely injured, he just didn’t have the strength to argue.

Suffering a little shameless teasing wouldn’t kill him, so he’ll just let him say whatever for now.

Ji Han came to that decision.

Though the Sect Leader had already moved his gaze away, Zhao Jian Gue still kept his eyes trained on the boy.

After saying what he said, somehow Zhao Jian Gue could only think of those five words in his head.

A feast for the eyes.

Indeed, he was a feast for the eyes.

秀色可餐  = xiu se ke can, usually in reference to gorgeous women

49

The Head Maid walked into the room with a pack of honey preserves.

She looked at the empty medicinal bowl and then became quite angry.

“Sect Leader, your respected self has again not properly taken your medication!” The Head Maid angrily exclaimed, “Where did your respected self dump the medication this time? How many times has this humble servant explained to your respected self that dumping medication into flower pots will cause the plants to wilt!”

Ji Han: “This Venerable One didn’t… …”

The Head Maid became even angrier: “Your respected self is lying! Sect Leader, avoiding medication will prevent recovery!”

Ji Han replied: “This Venerable One really did drink all of it… …”

The Head Maid countered: “Whenever your respected self was injured in the past, a bowl of medicine needed at least half an hour to finish. Today, this humble servant just went to retrieve a bag of honeyed preserves and the medicine bowl is already empty! Your respected self definitely secretly tossed it!”

Ji Han pouted heavily, looking deeply wronged.

Zhao Jian Gue could only help him explain: “He really did finish it all… …”

The Head Maid was still rather suspicious: “Gongzi Zhao, you don’t have to lie for him.”

Zhao Jian Gue didn’t know whether to laugh or to cry: “I want more than anything for him to recover faster, why would I lie for him?”

The Head Maid: “Then… …Sect Leader really did finish all of his medicine?”

Zhao Jian Gue: “Yes.”

The Head Maid seemed to believe his words, blinked several times, before saying: “So rare to see the Sect Leader take his medicine so swiftly, love is indeed powerful!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Ji Han: “… …”

The desire to save face is even more powerful.

The Head Maid continued: “Gongzi Zhao, this humble servant has something to request.”

Zhao Jian Gue was shocked: “What?”

The Head Maid showed a sincere expression: “Can your respected self take on all future jobs of serving medication to the Sect Leader?”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Ji Han: “… …

Ji Han: “I don’t consent!!!”

50

After the Head Maid retreated, both men were left to wordlessly look at each other.

Ji Han seemed to have gotten tired again, leaning back against the headboard.

He wore only a thin white inner shirt, his regular black outer robes draped over the side of the bed, his long hair falling down over his lapels. Overall, he lacked a great of his usual indifferent arrogance.

Zhao Jian Gue originally wanted to discuss with him about Elder Wen but seeing Ji Han about to shut his eyes, his words stopped right in his mouth.

Ji Han looked rather tired right now and leaving these words for a few more days shouldn’t hurt anymore.

Zhao Jian Gue came to this decision before feeling like there was too little to do in the moment; in the end, he went back to staring at Ji Han’s features.

Ji Han seemed finally annoyed by his constant gaze; opening his eyes, he said: “Are there flowers on this Venerable One’s face?”

Zhao Jian Gue reply was swift: “There are no flowers on your face.”

Ji Han: “Then what are you staring at me for?”

Zhao Jian Gue answered: “You’re more beautiful than flowers.”

Though he’d never had the idle time before to admire flowers, Zhao Jian Gue currently found himself unable to look away from the boy.

He thought Ji Han would get angry at his words but the boy just furrowed his brows before sighing heavily.

Zhao Jian Gue didn’t understand why he sighed.

Ji Han stayed quiet for a moment before asking him: “Just now, was there something you wanted to say to this Venerable One?”

Zhao Jian Gue was slightly hesitant.

Ji Han didn’t understand his own thoughts as he asked in him through crossed brows: “If you have something to say, just tell it to me directly, don’t keep it in your heart.”

Zhao Jian Gue intoned: “This is a matter of your sect which I have no business in addressing as an outsider.”

Ji Han nodded his head. “Say what you want, it’s fine.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “That day, after you passed out, Elder Wen arrived, bringing forth reinforcements.”

Ji Han: “I know of this.”

“You were unconscious, possibly comatose even, at the time yet the first thing he asked was whether or not ‘I’ was okay.” Zhao Jian Gue crossed his brows, “I’ve been disturbed by this fact for a while now. Shouldn’t he have worried about your health first? Even afterwards, he only spared you a short casual glance.”

Ji Han just exhaled a deep sigh again, intoning: “Oh this matter.”

Zhao Jian Gue asked him: “Is this a normal occurrence?”

Ji Han: “Very normal.”

Zhao Jian Gue was deeply puzzled.

Ji Han answered: “Elder Wen has always disliked me. Many people in the sect are aware of this fact.”

Zhao Jian Gue’s felt a bit of shock in his heart: “Then could it have been him that… ….”

Ji Han lightly shook his head: “No, though he doesn’t like me the man wouldn’t be stupid enough to try and kill me.”

Both fell into silence for a moment before Zhao Jian Gue suddenly asked: “May I ask… …why he hates you?”

The more thorough he was in his investigation of the inner workings of the Demon Sect, the more beneficial his infiltration will be for the Hao Ran League.

Zhao Jian Gue had some doubts in his heart right now, Xiao Lin had never mentioned this matter before in his reports to the Hao Ran League, meaning the spy had no clue about Ji Han’s poor relationship with his colleagues.

The boy was perhaps too negligent in his job as the undercover agent for the Righteous Sects.

Ji Han stayed silent for a long time, not answering. Zhao Jian Gue started to think he had stepped out of his boundaries in asking this question.

“Not many people in the sect are aware of this matter, as a Righteous Sect member you shouldn’t be informed it either.” Ji Han softly sighed, “But you’re…I think, telling or not telling you the matter won’t really make any difference.”

Zhao Jian Gue felt something move in his heart.

Ji Han intoned: “I’m not actually the previous Demon Sect Leader’s biological son. He was just my adopted father.”

Zhao Jian Gue nodded his head: “I know of this.”

Ji Han continued: “Rumors of this has spread all across the martial arts world, with people saying that it was because of his countless sins that caused karmic justice for him to never be able to beget an offspring, but you guys are probably not aware that he actually has a biological son.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “This matter I indeed was not aware of.”

Ji Han: “Adopted father didn’t wish for him to live a life of bloodied blades and so even to the age of ten the boy was not taught any degree of martial arts.”

Zhao Jian Gue stated: “He was born as the son of the Sect Leader. No matter what he would be unable to avoid the bloodied battles of the martial world.”

Ji Han: “So he was sent out of the sect, delivered to a regular couple’s home… …Adoptive father rather he’d live a simple ordinary life, than to have him step one foot in the martial world.”

For a moment, Zhao Jian Gue didn’t know what to say. He contemplated what state he’d be in right now if his master hadn’t taught him how to wield a blade. In the end, he could not fathom it at all, and so ended up just answering intuitively: “This was probably the love of a father.”

“His age is similar to mine. This year he should be around 20 years old.” Ji Han’s expression was a bit desolate, “He’s either a farmer, a merchant or a scholar by now, just no matter what he wouldn’t be a martial person.”

Zhao Jian Gue understood his meaning: “There must be many people that think you lucked into a big bargain.”

The Demon Sect focused a lot on pure bloodlines so it would be pretty normal if there were people that resented him for his background.

Ji Han pressed his lips together, not saying anything.

Zhao Jian Gue asked: “Have you always been… …envious of him?”

Ji Han seemed taken aback: “Why would you say that?”

Zhao Jian Gue said: “Just a wild guess.”

The two people once more fell into silence. Without warning he said: “Sometimes.”

Zhao Jian Gue looked at him quietly.

Ji Han whispered: “Actually I don’t really like swords that much.”

The statement came out barely more than a murmur. Zhao Jian Gue almost thought he had heard wrong.

He suddenly felt deep pity.

… …

Zhao Jian Gue blurted randomly: “Then do you like me?”

This question or scenario was not in the script book but he theorized that he’d probably been led astray by it.

Ji Han was dazed for a moment: “How…how can you be compared with a sword.”

Zhao Jian Gue nodded, deeply distressed: “I understand, I am not even worthy of a sword in your heart.”

Ji Han: “… …”

How to Incorrectly Ensnare a Demon Sect’s Leader (Ch 31-40)

31

Ji Han was dazed for a moment but then suddenly woke back to reality.

Elder Wen and others didn’t know what Zhao Jian Gue looked like; he was the Demon Sect’s Leader; if the Demon Sect’s Leader slept with a man, what of it?

Thinking about it this way, he felt a sense of confidence in the situation.

“Who allowed you guys to come in.” Ji Han coldly stated, “Go to the Council Hall. This Venerable One will arrive later.”

… …

Xiao Lin looked at the clothes on the ground and confusingly said: “Sect…Sect Leader, aren’t these Hero Zhao’s clothes?”

Ji Han: “… …”

Elder Wen inquired: “Hero Zhao?”

Enforcer Flower was a little shocked: “Is that the Number One swordsman, Zhao Jian Gue?”

Xiao Lin seemed to understand that he had made a big mistake and with a ‘putong’ sound fell to his knees, exclaiming: “This subordinate still doesn’t want to die yet! Please Sect Leader spare my life!”

Ji Han: “Ah… …”

The look on Elder Wen’s expression kept changing, until finally he snorted, turned his head away and headed out for the Council Hall.

Enforcer Flower covered her face while she lightly laughed, parting her lips to say: “Sect Leader, this subordinate will head to the Council Hall, your excellency… …should get dressed before coming.”

Ji Han: “… …”

She walked out for two steps, before turning back around, smiling gleefully as she said: “Your excellency has a pretty nice figure.”

Ji Han: “… …”

32

Ji Han had a frigid expression, not speaking even another half word with Zhao Jian Gue as he quickly got dressed before leaving –not looking back once.

Zhao Jian Gue was still deeply confused.

Just what exactly happened last night?

He recalled Yu Xian Er had told him before that if he were to really succeed in the seduction then the object below would be sore for most of the day, that both legs would be weak –just no matter what, he would be in some discomfort.

But aside from being a bit dizzy and wanting to vomit, he felt nothing else wrong.

Unless Ji Han was the one to…

No, judging by Ji Han’s expression, he didn’t seem to be in any pain either.

Did they just both get blind drunk, stripped each other naked, slipped under the covers to sleep peacefully for the night?

Xiao Lin stuck out half of his head through the doorway.

Face bright with color, he looked to be in a very good mood.

Zhao Jian Gue suddenly remembered that Xiao Lin was Ji Han’s close personal attendant –he should be well aware of what happened last night.

Xiao Lin helped him pick up his clothes from the ground, grinning brightly at him while he said: “Hero Zhao, thank goodness you were able to get the Sect Leader drunk last night, only because of that was I able to drag both of you onto the bed. Right now, Sect Leader must definitely think he did something to you last night. The entire sect will unavoidably soon find out about this matter too.”

Zhao Jian Gue asked in confusion: “Absolutely nothing happened last night?”

Xiao Lin flashed a sad look. depressingly exclaimed: “Last night you both in total drank 7-8 jugs of wine, drunk to the point of unconsciousness… …in those circumstances, it’s really hard for anything to happen.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Why was he so sad about that?!

Xiao Lin exhaled a long sigh: “Sect Leader’s alcohol toleration is usually really good, yet last night he got so drunk so fast. It was probably because of his empty stomach.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Xiao Lin said: “I will report this development back to the Hao Ran League! Hero Zhao, keep up your effort! You must make Sect Leader fully trust you! Only this way can we simultaneously attack from the inside and outside, taking down the Demon Sect all at once!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Okay.

It could be begrudgingly considered that he had succeeded in the seduction plan.

But how come the feeling he had right now was a bit…weird?

33

Xiao Lin asked Zhao Jian Gue: “Though our Sect Leader is very alcohol tolerant he’s not actually the type that carelessly drinks. Just how exactly did Hero Zhao manage to get the Sect Leader intoxicated? This humble one is indeed curious.”

Zhao Jian Gue could only honestly divulge last’s night’s events to him.

Xiao Lin’s expression became strange.

“Hero Zhao,” Xiao Lin found the next words hard to say, “The elders wanted you to find not the vulnerabilities in his sword skills.”

Zhao Jian Gue flashed a bemused look.

Xiao Lin continued saying: “But rather the vulnerabilities of his psyche.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

So that’s what they meant!

By grasping onto the vulnerable side of Ji Han’s personality could he get the man to show him his affectionate side!

Zhao Jian Gue suddenly came to that epiphany.

Xiao Lin: “With the original script book no longer fitting these current circumstances, the elders asked me to give this new booklet to you, Hero Zhao.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

… …

With Ji Han not present, Zhao Jian Gue carefully reviewed the new script book several times over and over again.

Zhao Jian Gue felt deep hesitation for the new script book’s contents. “Would any of this really work?”

Xiao Lin: “It will, it will! Definitely will!”

Zhao Jian Gue asked: “But…will Ji Han really fall for it?”

Xiao Lin: “The Sect Leader is just like your own respected self: a sword fanatic that knows little else, especially when it comes to sexual matters. He should believe everything you say.”

Zhao Jian Gue hesitated for a long time, before finally relenting: “Okay, I’ll give it a try.”

34

By the time Ji Han came back from the Council Hall it was already twilight.

He had an absolutely gloomy expression; his mood very dark.

Zhao Jian Gue could guess why.

Though throughout history the Demon Sect was one to follow their Sect Leader’s orders without falter, they were still not as strict or austere as the Righteous Sects in traditional matters. Though Ji Han was the leader, the boy was still quite young and naturally the older more experienced sect members would unavoidably still discipline him if they felt it was needed.

With such a scandal having occurred, Ji Han mostly likely endured quite a bit of admonishing from everyone.

As soon as Ji Han entered the room, maids brought in dinner before helping him gargle, wash up, and finally serving him the food they brought in.

A bit earlier, Zhao Jian Gue had already finished his dinner when Xiao Lin had still been here but currently he still shamelessly steppe forward, intending to take dinner again with Ji Han.

The boy was deeply surprised by the fact that Zhao Jian Gue had still yet to leave his room.

He really didn’t want to speak with the man and so he only just sent the Head Maid, standing next to him, a telling look.

Head Maid was a smart intuitive woman, so she naturally understood the Sect Leader’s silent gaze.

She walked over to Zhao Jian Gue, intoning: “Childe Zhao, your respected self should retire now.”

Zhao Jian Gue hesitated before finally setting his resolve to follow the new script’s instructions.

The Head Maid reiterated: “Childe Zhao, your respected self should retire now.”

Zhao Jian Gue asked: “Retire where?”

Head Maid: “Naturally to your own bedroom.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “I’m not going back.”

Head Maid: “It is already quite late, it is better that Childe Zhao retire.”

“No.” Zhao Jian Gue’s tone paused slightly, trying to exhibit a deeply aggrieved expression. “I feel weak at the knees, I don’t want to go back.”

Head Maid: “… …”

Ji Han: “… …”

35

The Head Maid really wished she could vanish in that instant.

Ji Han’s face had gained a very unpleasant expression.

She knew the Sect Leader’s temper was on the verge of exploding at that moment. If this Hero Zhao were to say one more wrong thing then he could very well get fed to wild dogs.

The Head Maid started to sympathize with this Hero Zhao.

Ji Han finally couldn’t resist opening his mouth: “What do your knees being numb have to do with me? Why do you want to stay in this Venerable One’s bedroom?”

Zhao Jian Gue hesitated a long while before saying: “If not for you, why else would my legs be numb?”

Indeed just like Ji Han, he was a sword fanatic that didn’t care or understand much about sex; to this present day Zhao Jian Gue was still without a wife or kids. But he was already 28 years old now, even without experience he was well aware of the implicit meaning behind his words.

Zhao Jian Gue’s typically all-year-round austere expression, finally gained a flush of embarrassment.

Ji Han became dazed, then shouted angrily: “How can you say such nonsense?!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “How am I speaking nonsense?”

Ji Han wanted to argue with him more but when he recalled that they had indeed woken up naked in bed together this morning, he just ended up swallowing the next words he had planned. The extreme effort Ji Han used to hold back his words caused his face to turn red and so he could only look away, refusing to answer him.

Only then did he notice the way the maids were all looking at him.

It seemed like all those pairs of wide eyed, teary orbs all said to him in capital letters: heartbreaker, stinky bastard, and shameless vagabond! Even the gaze of his most loyal, Head Maid, was rather odd.

Ji Han fell silent.

Zhao Jian Gue just felt like he was taking advantage of a naive young man that didn’t understand worldly matters.

He felt incomparable shame in his heart, but he could only grit his teeth and proceed forth with the script’s text.

“I’m hungry,” Zhao Jian Gue said, “I have yet to eat dinner.”

The maids all trained their gaze back onto Ji Han’s expression.

Ji Han remained silent for a while before finally saying, “Go add another pair of chopsticks.”

Zhao Jian Gue exhaled.

Xiao Lin was right, Ji Han really didn’t understand this stuff.

The maids added bowls and chopsticks, invited Zhao Jian Gue to sit next to Ji Han before retreating, leaving only the Head Maid behind to serve.

Ji Han shut his mouth and focused on eating.

Zhao Jian Gue had already eaten before and didn’t feel hungry so after taking two bites he put down his chopsticks.

After a long while, Ji Han awkwardly asked, “How come you’re not eating anymore?”

Zhao Jian Gue recalled the script’s words: “Feeling physically uncomfortable. I have no appetite.”

Ji Han: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue only felt extreme awkwardness.

What kind of messed up script was this anyway?!

Could it get any worse?!

How come every sentence seemed to imply that something ‘unspeakable’ happened last night?!

… …

Ji Han suddenly quickly grabbed a piece of meat and placed it into his bowl, speaking as if there was a fish bone lodged in his throat:

“Even if you’re unwell you still can’t let yourself go hungry,” Ji Han continued, “Anything you want to eat, just go and request it from the kitchen.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

This was not the Demon Sect Leader he was accustomed with!

36

Zhao Jian Gue stayed stunned for a moment, unable to think of what to say back.

The two people proceeded to eat silently for a bit before Ji Han suddenly parted his lips to say: “If you’re feeling unwell then should I ask a doctor to come and examine you?”

Zhao Jian Gue nearly choked to death on a mouthful of rice.

This current Ji Han was a bit….too considerate!

He didn’t have any illness so how could he see a doctor?! If he was examined then everything would be exposed!

Zhao Jian Gue coughed several times, just managing to swallow that gulp of rice before hurriedly iterating: “No need!”

Ji Han saw that he was choking and raised his palm, as if preparing to give his back a few pats, but that hand stopped in the air for a while before finally lowering again.

He hesitated before finally saying: “You don’t have to panic, the sect’s Doctor Yan is very discrete.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “It’s really not needed…”

Ji Han replied: “Don’t hide an illness from fear medics.”*

Zhao Jian Gue rambled: “I’m quite fine…”

If a doctor really came then I would really not be fine!

Ji Han furrowed his brow, seeming very puzzled: “Didn’t you say just now that your legs were numb and you felt uncomfortable?”

Zhao Jian Gue: “Just now that was….that was…”

Even he didn’t know how to get around this current lie.

Ji Han fell quiet; Zhao Jian Gue too didn’t dare to speak another syllable.

The Head Maid felt how incredibly awkward the atmosphere had gotten, identifying Zhao Jian Gue’s odd behavior. She shuffled over to Ji Han’s ear and quietly whispered a few words.

Ji Han spoke in surprise: “There’s no need to see a doctor?”

Head Maid maintained her dignified countenance while nodding.

Ji Han felt he finally understood the situation. Parting his lips, he spoke: “Then a doctor won’t be called.”

Zhao Jian Gue exhaled a sigh of relief.

Ji Han spoke to the Head Maid: “Go and get the medicine.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Medicine?

What medicine?

Just what exactly did they say to each other just now?!

No. He couldn’t just arbitrarily start taking medicine!

Zhao Jian Gue’s mind suddenly flashed forward something: he recalled that the script book had a paragraph about medicine.

He suddenly extended both arms to grasp onto Ji Han’s hands.

Ji Han couldn’t help jumping in surprise, turning pale with fright: “What are you doing?!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “There’s no need for medicine.”

Ji Han didn’t understand: “If you have an illness then seek treatment. After taking the medicine you will get better.”

Zhao Jian Gue forcefully intoned with heavy affection: “You’re my medicine.”

Ji Han: “… …”

Even the Head Maid, who had half departed, stopped at the doorway:  “… …”

*Idiom: has multiple meanings but in this case it’s phobia of medics

37

Even Zhao Jian Gue felt what he said was too gross and sappy after saying it; unable to do anything else, he could only lower his gaze to take in the palms that were still linked with his.

Ji Han’s hands were fair and thin, the phalanges long and slender, thin calluses covered the palm center, the nails trimmed just right.

These pair of hands were used to hold swords.

But in comparison to the rest of the martial world, these pair of hands were way too beautiful.

Ji Han was most likely shaken by Zhao Jian Gue’s words and so remained stock still for a bit, forgetting to even withdraw his hand.

Head Maid hesitantly asked: “Sect Leader, does this humble servant still need to go retrieve medicine?”

No one answered her.

Ji Han slowly recovered.

One finger at a time, he slowly did his best to retract from Zhao Jian Gue’s grip.

The man’s hold was simply too tight. Ji Han found his last words too gross and sappy so he couldn’t help blushing in both cheeks being so close to him.

Just then Xiao Lin stepped in with a thick stack of books.

“Sect Leader, here are this year’s Mobei ledgers and balances for their seven subsidiaries,” Xiao Lin explained, “Please review these.”

Ji Han nodded, telling Xiao Lin to put everything in the study.

Head Maid took the chance to escape with Xiao Lin.

Ji Han kept a steeled expression as he finally addressed Zhao Jian Gue: “Fine, if you don’t want to take medicine than this Venerable One will not force you.”

Zhao Jian Gue exhaled a breath of relief.

That’s good.

In that case, can we call back the Head Maid that just left right now?

Ji Han furrowed his brows, remained silent for a bit before stiffly intoning: “You shouldn’t…don’t stay up too late.”

Zhao Jian Gue didn’t find his statement inappropriate and simply nodded his head.

So long as I don’t have to take medication then anything is fine!

38

After Ji Han left the maid moved to the outside of the room to await instructions as well so in the end only Zhao Jian Gue was left inside the room.

Putting down his tableware, the man didn’t know whether to go back to his own room or continue waiting here.

He’d already walked several circumferences around Ji Han’s bedroom; the bedside portrait of himself seemed to have been removed entirely because he couldn’t see it anywhere.

After a bit, Xiao Lin came sneaking back in.

“Hero Zhao,” Xiao Lin cautiously exclaimed, “Sect Leader is currently busy with official duties; he shouldn’t be back anytime soon.”

Zhao Jian Gue nodded in acknowledgment.

Xiao Lin: “I’m afraid Hero Zhao will have to continue waiting for a bit.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue: “I can’t go back to my room?”

Xiao Lin: “Of course not!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Xiao Lin: “This is a golden opportunity! We have to thoroughly utilize it to entrap the Sect Leader! How can you give up so easily!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Xiao Lin swallowed in excitement, ruminated for a bit, speaking slowly: “Zhao Jian Gue, there is one matter… …that I have to still address with you.”

Zhao Jian Gue asked: “What?”

Xiao Lin intoned: “I just received word from the leader of the martial arts world. The Hao Ran League intercepted a message from Jackdaw –they’re planning on assassinating Sect Leader Ji tonight at midnight.”

Zhao Jian Gue was startled.

Jackdaw was an infamous assassin guild in the martial arts world –neither the Righteous nor Wrong Sects wanted to have any affiliations with the guild. The culmination of three big martial arts mavericks in the guild forced even Zhao Jian Gue to have to admit their capabilities were intimidating. If Jackdaw wanted to take his life, he calculated that there was maybe around 70 percent chance of getting killed by them.

Having said that, Zhao Jian Gue wasn’t really worried.

Though Ji Han’s skills were slightly inferior to his, the Demon Sect’s defenses were still quite formidable after all. How could their Sect Leader be so easily killed?

Xiao Lin continued explaining: “We don’t know who in the sect has gotten bribed by Jackdaw, the attack could even be from the Sect Leader’s personal bodyguard.”

Zhao Jian Gue’s tone was slightly hesitant: “Do you know who ordered the hit?”

Xiao Lin answered: “Sect Leader’s age is too young, too inexperienced with few connections, and also continually puts off attacking the Han Ran League –all these culminates to him having numerous dissatisfied sect subordinates.”

Zhao Jian Gue’s head flashed forth the faces of Enforcer Flower and Elder Wen he’d seen this morning.

Xiao Lin: “Hero Zhao, if you are able to succeed in the seduction, then you can advise him through pillow talk about how to deal with the volatile sect elders but if the Sect Leader were to die then the Demon Sect will surely pick the next leader from the current sect’s Elders. At that point, a seduction plan would not be possible. Additionally, all the sect Elders have obstinate volatile personalities which would be completely detrimental to the Hao Ran League.”

Zhao Jian Gue couldn’t help asking: “What does the leader of the martial arts world want me to do?”

Xiao Lin answered: “Naturally the leader wants Hero Zhao to succeed in the original plan as soon as possible, it’s just for these next few days…for these next few days, please carefully protect Sect Leader Ji, Hero Zhao!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Xiao Lin anxiously awaited his reply.

Zhao Jian Gue in the end only exhaled heavily: “You can rest assured, I will do everything I can to ensure Sect Leader Ji’s safety.”

Xiao Lin rejoiced in exclamation: “Hero Zhao, if you really do your best then Sect Leader will surely be moved and love you even more!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Xiao Lin: “Hero Zhao, we’re all counting on you!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

39

Close to midnight, Ji Han returned from the study.

Zhao Jian Gue had almost suffocated in bated breath waiting for him.

His sword was not at his side; the Sect Leader’s bedroom was naturally not a place where just anyone could casually bring their weapon into. When Xiao Lin dragged both of them into the room last night, the boy had taken his sword and stashed it somewhere.

Just now, he had sent Xiao Lin to go and retrieve his blade but for some reason, even after a while had passed the boy had yet to return.

Ji Han got quite a shock when his eye took in Zhao Jian Gue’s still present person.

Ji Han asked: “How come you haven’t left yet?”

He immediately regretted the words after asking.

Zhao Jian Gue was surely going to reply with something ludicrous and fulsome.

Just why did he have to get drunk last night!

Zhao Jian Gue asked him back: “Why shouldn’t I be here?”

Ji Han didn’t want to answer him.

Opening the door, he called for the Head Maid that stood outside to come in.

“Send him back,” Ji Han instructed, “This Venerable One wants to rest now.”

Zhao Jian Gue stated: “I’m not going.”

He was a little nervous; Xiao Lin had just instructed him that if Ji Han was adamant in him leaving then he was to vehemently grab onto the man’s waist and not let go.

This way Ji Han would not be able to force him away.

Ji Han furrowed his brows, glaring at him.

Zhao Jian Gue readied himself to throw away all shame and grab onto Ji Han’s waist.

Suddenly, a scream emitted from outside.

In that moment, Zhao Jian Gue’s entire person stiffened.

Midnight had arrived. The Jackdaw cries.

40

With no sword at his side, Zhao Jian Gue couldn’t help feeling rather unnerved.

The Head Maid had a pale expression but still maintained her calm.

Ji Han may not know what was going on but even so, he knew that this was not a good sign.

He could smell the scent of blood.

Outside the door, three people appeared from the shadows. A young man with a short beard dressed like a white clothed scholar, a young lady dressed in spring green looking about 17-18 years old, and finally an old man with a lame leg holding crutches.

This group was quite an odd amalgamation but Zhao Jian Gue didn’t find them in the least bit intriguing.

For this big hit on the Demon Sect’s leader, Jackdaw had specially sent out their three most famous and powerful pugilists.

These three did not need to do a sneak attack with this assassination because with their skills combined, they were able to kill nearly anyone in the martial arts world.

The first one to speak was that white clothed scholar.

His name was Si Gai.

His gaze locked on Ji Han’s face for a long time before speaking excitedly:

“Who would have thought the Demon Sect Leader was born so handsomely,” he sighed, “What a shame.”

Ji Han: “… …”

The green clothed female flashed an expression of disgust: “Can you not speak in such a disgusting manner?”

Her name was called Xu Jingying. She used to be a leading disciple to inherit Emei Sect’s leadership. Though she looked like a young girl she was actually already 28 years old.

She also [like Zhao Jian Gue and Ji Han] used a sword, and was particularly gifted with it.

The remaining old man had the surname of Sun but no one knew of his full name. The martial world referred to him as “Crutches Sun” because his choice of weapon just so happened to be the iron crutches he used to move.

Ji Han probably had already approximated who they all were.

He couldn’t help feeling a sliver of unease.

Crutches Sun asked: “Is that man…Zhao Jian Gue, Hero Zhao?”

Zhao Jian Gue: “Yes.”

Si Gai clicked his tongue a few times.

“Who’d have thought the Number One Swordsman was also born so handsomely,” he murmured, “Such a shame he’s a bottom.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

What’s ‘bottom’ supposed to mean? How come he couldn’t understand?

Crutches Sun cleared his throat lightly, intoning: “Hero Zhao, our target isn’t you, could we please beg Hero Zhao to give us a little leeway.”

Zhao Jian Gue answered: “Not happening.”

Si Gai sighed in disappointment, as if filled with deep lament.

“I heard from the servants here that Hero Zhao is currently physically unwell. Presumably he won’t be able to move too much,” he continued, “Since you can’t match up to us, why not just abandon this villain and flee to safety?”

It took a while for Zhao Jian Gue and Ji Han to understand the scholar’s words about his illness.

Both of their faces reddened simultaneously in the aftermath, leading Si Gai to gain a surprised expression. “So what the servants gossiped was actually real-”

Xu Jingying screamed suddenly: “SHUT UP! DON’T SAY ANOTHER WORD!”

Ji Han, as well, didn’t want to hear another word from them.

He shot a gaze to the Head Maid who then proceeded to grab and pull Zhao Jian Gue protectively to the side.

Zhao Jian Gue didn’t understand: “What are you…”

The Head Maid pulled out from her belt a long soft sword*, clearly knowing some martial arts herself and intending to protect him.

She whispered in a soft tone to Zhao Jian Gue: “Childe Zhao is currently unwell, please don’t force yourself to fight.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

He actually wasn’t feeling unwell at all!

Head Maid sincerely intoned: “Please put faith in the Sect Leader, Childe Zhao!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

*a soft sword is exactly what it sounds like, looking just like a regular blade but very thin, light and more flexible than a regular blade

How to Incorrectly Ensnare a Demon Sect’s Leader (Ch 26-30)

论如何错误地套路一个魔教教主 by 一只大雁

26

Zhao Jian Gue sat down beside Ji Han.

In front of Ji Han was still his bowl of scrambled egg noodles that he’d only eaten two bites of. He was very hungry but with Zhao Jian Gue sitting beside him he was too embarrassed to continue eating.

This scene was unspeakably awkward.

Zhao Jian Gue really wanted to continue conversing about swordplay with Ji Han but he thought that when someone was eating, sword skills were not a very good conversation piece. Besides continually bringing up the same topic was bound to be boring. As such he shut his mouth and sat watching the other man dully.

Ji Han had no choice but to put down his chopsticks.

Ji Han asked him: “What do you want to talk about?”

Zhao Jian Gue sincerely said: “I don’t know.”

Ji Han contemplated, then said: “You really killed the leader’s head disciple?”

No. I didn’t.

Not only had he not but the guy was living the time of his life right now: hiding inside the Hao Ran League, only needing to eat and eat – sleep and sleep all day long.

But he could only admit the crime.

Ji Han asked: “What wrong did he commit?”

Zhao Jian Gue stated: “He didn’t do anything wrong.”

Ji Han: “Then why did you kill him?”

He never needed a reason for killing someone, because he was inherently a villain, but Zhao Jian Gue was different: Zhao Jian Gue was a hero, when a hero pulled his sword there had to be a reason behind it.

Good thing the martial arts elders had thought of an excuse for him.

Zhao Jian Gue said: “I’d been drinking.”

Ji Han was more or less surprised: “You’d been drinking?”

Zhao Jian Gue sighed, looking very upset: “I had never drank before.”

Ji Han understood: “You were intoxicated?”

Zhao Jian Gue nodded.

Ji Han seemingly became filled with interest.

Ji Han: “You’ve never drank before then?”

Zhao Jian Gue answered: “Yes, drinking alcohol causes a person’s reflexes to slow down -causes the sword in their hand to become unstable.”

Ji Han asked: “You really can’t tolerate alcohol?”

Ji Han: “Never thought the world number one swordsman would have something he wasn’t good at.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “Everybody has a weakness.”

Ji Han: “I finally have something that can surpass you.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …ah?”

Ji Han was slightly excited: “Since you can’t sleep we’ll have ourselves a good drinking contest.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

27

Several jugs of 20 year old “Zhu Yue Qing” were all lined up on the table.

Zhao Jian Gue was still vehemently trying to reject: “I don’t know how to drink, I really can’t drink.”

Ji Han countered by asking: “You’re afraid that you’ll again exhibit drunken madness?”

Zhao Jian Gue was not at all reserved in his statement: “I…I kill people when I drink alcohol!”

Ji Han was a bit stunned; he couldn’t help thinking that Zhao Jian Gue’s behavior was very intriguing.

“You can relax,” Ji Han spoke, “Killing me is not that easy.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “But… …”

Ji Han had already broken the seal on one of the wine jugs.

In a moment the fragrance of the rich wine disseminated everywhere.

As soon as Zhao Jian Gue smelled the wine, he already felt his head getting dizzy.

Ji Han spoke again: “Relax, you don’t know how to drink and so this Venerable One will not bully you either.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Ji Han: “You drink one cup, this Venerable One will take 3 cups.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

This kind of concession inevitably caused a bit of frustration to form in Zhao Jian Gue’s heart.

Ji Han was very gratified in that moment.

Unsure of the reason, just seeing Zhao Jian Gue’s frustrated appearance, caused him to feel strange uncontrollable satisfaction. This feeling was more thrilling than even the kind he got after advancing in sword skills.

Zhao Jian Gue parted his lips, speaking: “That won’t do.”

Ji Han was very delighted: “Then how many more cups do you want me to give you advancement on?”

“I don’t like anyone going easy on me,” Zhao Jian Gue said one word at a time: “You-drink-a-cup-I’ll-drink-a-cup.”

Ji Han: “… …”

… …

Ji Han was very displeased.

His strange sense of satisfaction hadn’t even lasted that long before it was knocked down with one sentence from Zhao Jian Gue. How could he be happy with that?

Ji Han always considered himself as having good alcohol toleration. Occasionally at sect banquets, he could single-handedly out-drink everyone in the hall until they were all intoxicated while he himself was still only 60-70% drunk.

Zhao Jian Gue wanted to have a fair showdown with him?

[Overestimating oneself.]*

Jin Han grinned coldly.

Watch this Venerable One intoxicate you.

*Idiom 自不量力 literally meaning ‘not knowing one’s own strength’ but has implication that one is overestimating oneself.

28

After half a round of drinks, Ji Han was already having some regrets.

He should have first finished eating that bowl of scrambled egg noodles before competing with Zhao Jian Gue.

Hungry people were naturally more prone to getting drunk.

Right now his head was already a bit dizzy; his stomach a little uncomfortable.

What’s more Zhao Jian Gue wasn’t really as intolerant of alcohol as he’d made himself to be.

It seemed like the task of getting the man drunk was not going to be that easy after all.

… …

Zhao Jian Gue was also quite annoyed.

He never drank alcohol that was indeed a true statement.

This would count as his first time drinking.

When the first cup of liquor touched his lips, Zhao Jian Gue still didn’t understand what was so damn appealing about this stuff?

After finishing the half round of drinks, he was of the opinion that the entire world was beautiful; his heart was filled with hopeful ambition; the sect leader beside him was his best friend. He simply had an entire chest full of personal secrets he wanted to share with the other person.

It was only later on did he realize that this was a sign of intoxication.

Ji Han just grit his teeth before continuing to toast him.

Zhao Jian Gue also could only grit his teeth before continuing to drink.

Both people were the ‘unwilling to surrender’ type. By the end, Zhao Jian Gue’s head was dizzy, eyes bleary, and just wanted to collapse for a good night’s sleep.

Ji Han yanked on his collar, yelling at him through slurred speech: “You… …you lied to me, you’re overtly very tolerant of alcohol… …”

Before even finishing his words, the man had already slid down the table.

Zhao Jian Gue put his head on the table, both eyes weary, while in his head he had only one vague thought:

He never wanted to drink alcohol again.

29

The sky was very bright when Zhao Jian Gue next woke up.

He was lying on a very soft bed, body covered by a high quality silk quilt.

Zhao Jian Gue felt a splitting headache and was thirsty enough to probably drink all the water tank’s water.

Someone was shouting from outside the door, sounding like Xiao Lin’s voice.

“Sect leader, the Left and Right Enforcers along with the sect’s elder members have been waiting in the Council Hall for a long time now. Is your excellency awake yet?”

In that moment, Zhao Jian Gue was slightly confused.

… …sect leader?

He turned his head to take in the sight of an expressionless Ji Han.

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Ji Han: “… …”

30

Ji Han suppressed his voice’s volume while he asked: “Why are you here?!”

Zhao Jian Gue’s cognitive processing was still a bit delayed: “Where?”

Ji Han quietly seethed: “This is this Venerable One’s bedroom!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Yeah! Why was he sleeping in the sect leader’s bed!

Yesterday they both got drunk…then what happened?

A loud ruckus emitted from outside.

Xiao Lin stated: “Elder Wen, Enforcer Flower. Why did your excellencies’ come here?”

A woman’s gentle voice orated: “Today our sect leader has taken a long time to get out of bed. I can’t help but be a bit worried.”

Xiao Lin replied: “Enforcer Flower need not worry. Presumably, sect leader has already started getting dressed.”

Ji Han’s complexion was dark, wanting to leap out of bed but in his half movement the silk covers slipped from him, revealing his lean but muscular naked upper body.

Ji Han: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

… … had he succeeded in the seduction plan?

… …

An old man’s furious voice came shouting into the air from outside: “He’s only been the Sect Leader for a few days! And he’s already this negligent! Open the door! This old one must teach the boy a lesson in memory of our previous leader!”

Xiao Lin: “Elder Wen! Your excellency must not be so agitated!”

Ji Han desperately threw the quilt over Zhao Jian Gue’s head like his life depended on it.

Still immersed in having succeeded with the seduction plan, Zhao Jian Gue felt deep confusion by Ji Han’s action.

Ji Han: “If you dare to show your face, this Venerable One will strangle you to death!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

The room’s door had already been forcibly pushed open by Elder Wen.

Xiao Lin and several maids stood awkwardly outside, waiting by the doorway. Elder Wen brusquely rushed forward into the room with Enforcer Flower standing a bit to the side – the latter here as if only to watch in entertainment.

Clothes were strewn every which way in the room, Ji Han gripped the unused half of the quilt against his bare chest, looking as if he wanted nothing more than to use the duvet to suffocate the other person next to him.

Elder Wen: “… …”

How to Incorrectly Ensnare a Demon Sect’s Leader (CH 16-25)

16

Zhao Jian Gue didn’t know how to explain.

He didn’t think that this moment would come so fast.

Xiao Lin was still trying hard to explain to Ji Han: “Sect Leader, subordinate was just talking to Hero Zhao because….”

Ji Han coldly said: “I’m not asking you.”

Xiao Lin was forced to shut his mouth and step aside.

Ji Han turned his gaze back to Zhao Jian Gue: “I’m asking you.”

Zhao Jian Gue knew that any explanation right now was of no use. He could only vehemently think of that last move.

The text said there had to be a wall.

Ji Han currently stood next to the open doorway, behind him were two delicate looking maids; he first had to trick Ji Han into standing before a wall.

Zhao Jian Gue said: “Come here, I’ll tell you what we were doing.”

Ji Han still had a dark look on his face staring at him, staying completely motionless.

Zhao Jian Gue thought for a moment, then said: “Some things, I think you won’t want others to hear.”

Ji Han asked: “This Venerable One’s actions are candid and straightforward, there is nothing that can’t be known to others.”

Zhao Jian Gue said: “‘Be together in life or in death.’”

Ji Han immediately came over.

Behind Zhao Jian Gue’s back was the wall.

Ji Han gritted his teeth and asked: “What exactly do you want to say?!”

Very good. The first step had been actualized.

Second step was to take the other by surprise.

Zhao Jian Gue waved for Ji Han to come closer. “Lend me your ear.”

Ji Han: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue: “Be together in life…”

Ji Han was expressionless as he leaned his ear close: “SAY WHAT YOU WANT FAST.”

His words hadn’t finished orating yet and Zhao Jian Gue had suddenly grabbed his wrist, flipped and pushing him against the wall.

Ji Han’s back brusquely hit the hard surface; feeling sore, his heart’s anger rushed forward –he wished he could enact on this person “1000 blades, 10000 cuts”*. Just as he was going to make a move however, Zhao Jian Gue squeezed his chin and moved in close to just before his eyes.

Ji Han froze.

In his memories, there had never been anyone that dared to be this close to him before.

Not to mention, this…this was a man!

Not just Ji Han, but everyone in the room was also muddled.

Including Zhao Jian Gue.

According to the book, the next step was to…kiss.

But how should I kiss?! Kiss the face, lips or the forehead?! A straight kiss or a slanted kiss?! How long do I kiss?! An instant or a moment?! When kissing do I continue kissing without stop or stop moving during the kiss?! Is the continued kissing like a woodpecker?! But stopping without moving is so awkward!

How come none of these criteria were specified by the heroes!! What good are you guys for anyway!!!

Zhao Jian Gue’s inner heart was surging, but outwardly he could only maintain his composure, coldly looking at Ji Han.

Ji Han’s face was extremely close.

Zhao Jian Gue suddenly realized that Ji Han’s appearance was naturally quite attractive; it was only that he tended to have too gloomy of an expression. If he were to just smile some more, he imagined the man would look even better.

And just like that Zhao Jian Gue thought of what Yue Qing Qing had said to him before.

The corners of his mouth curved up hard, slightly smiling towards Ji Han.

Ji Han: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Ji Han: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue disappointingly let go and turned away. “… …I have to recuperate for a bit, I’ll be back in awhile.”

Ji Han: “… …”

Ji Han: “DO YOU HAVE AN ILLNESS OR SOMETHING?!”

*[1000 blades, 10000 cuts] Idiom for the type of punishment as can be expected haha.

17

By the time he screamed however, Zhao Jian Gue had already made it out the door.

Ji Han stayed frozen for a long time, before suddenly realizing that there were several other people still present in this room.

He turned his head to look darkly at Xiao Lin and then those two maids.

The slightly older maid suddenly clutched her chest and quickly fainted to the ground, declaring: “Ah, this humble servant this morning forgot to eat breakfast and suddenly feels fatigued, eyes foggy…completely unable to see anything…”

Ji Han: “… …”

The younger aged maid was panicking more so.

She looked to her left and then to her right. At a loss, she in the end just shut her eyes, and with a ‘putong!’ sound collapsed next to her servant jiejie’s** side.

Xiao Lin was deeply nervous: “Sect Leader, this really isn’t what you think it is.”

Ji Han laughed coldly. “Whatever it was doesn’t matter anymore.”

Since everyone saw it, then all he had to do was kill and seal everyone’s lips.

Xiao Lin exclaimed in panic: “Hero Zhao was just… …he was just… …just asking me what your dietary preferences are!”

Ji Han was stunned: “My dietary preferences?”

Xiao Lin nodded again and again: “Hero Zhao wants to personally cook for Sect Leader!”

Ji Han: “… …”

**Jie Jie means older sister, but it can be used for older females in a work/professional setting, not necessarily blood related, as is the case here.

18

Zhao Jian Gue walked two complete circles around the yard’s circumference before finally calming down.

He didn’t understand.

Not even back when he individually faced the Western Heaven Cultivatist Luo Cha’s Demonic powers was he this flustered. Just what was making him be at such a loss? Wasn’t it just the matter of closing one’s eyes and pressing the lips down?

Eventually, he had no choice but to return to the room.

The two maids had already retreated by then, Ji Han pulled a long face as he sat at the table. Xiao Lin stood tremblingly at his side.

Zhao Jian Gue said: “I finished recuperating.”

Ji Han looked at him, as if having seen some sort of monster.

Zhao Jian Gue continued speaking: “You…go over and stand next to the wall?”

Ji Han coldly opened his mouth to say: “This evening I want to eat scrambled egg noodles. The noodles need to have two sesame oil stir fried eggs, add julienned ginger, they are not allowed to have any green onions. Top the noodles with sesame oil after leaving the pot. If the noodles have one bit of green onions, then you must immediately vacate the sect for this Venerable One.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …ah?”

19

Ji Han had already stepped out of the door with an indifferent expression.

Zhao Jian Gue was quite confused so he turned to ask Xiao Lin: “What was that about?”

Xiao Lin obsequiously said: “An extemporized solution… … Hero Zhao, this is an extemporized solution!”

Zhao was even more at a loss.

Xiao Lin spoke: “I told Sect Leader that you just now were inquiring about his dietary preferences.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “Dietary preferences? Why?”

Xiao Lin: “Because you want to personally cook for him!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Xiao Lin spoke: “My mother once told me, in order to grab a hold of a man’s heart that one must first grab a hold of his stomach.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Xiao Lin spoke again: “Hero Zhao can obtain even the title ‘World’s Number One Swordsman’, just one measly bowl of scrambled egg noodles is definitely not a difficult thing.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Xiao Lin: “Hero Zhao! The Hao Ran League are all dependent on you!”

… …

Zhao Jian Gue said: “There is one thing I don’t understand.”

Xiao Lin quickly answered: “Hero Zhao please say it!

Zhao Jian Gue slowly opened his mouth to ask: “Why would your mother teach you how to grab a hold of a MAN’S heart?”

Xian Lin: “… …”

20

Zhao Jian Gue had never used his pair of hands to grip a kitchen knife before.

For martial masters, anything in the world could become a weapon used to kill someone, a kitchen knife is still a knife, and naturally still a weapon. Zhao Jian Gue may be the number one swordsman, but the weapons he was skilled in using were not few in number. He had carefully studied knives before but naturally none of those knives were of the kitchen kind.

He had just wanted to mince some garlic but had already lost grip of the knife twice.

If it hadn’t been for his apt agility then his feet would have long since been pierced.

Xiao Lin couldn’t watch anymore and so he called for the kitchen’s cooking lady to come and write a recipe for advisement.

From Ji Han’s childhood this lady had already been on kitchen duty for meals. She couldn’t be any more cognizant of the sect leader’s taste preferences. These scrambled egg noodles were easy to make and easy to get started with; she just gave a few simple instructions. The noodles were ready-made ones. Zhao Jian Gue just had to dunk them in water, and then after the eggs were cooked, mix them in with the cooked noodles.

She also instructed specifically that the sect leader deeply hated green onions. Though, when he was frying the eggs, he still had to add some raw ginger and minced garlic.

Xiao Lin gave Zhao Jin Gue the recipe and then went to run errands for Ji Han.

Presently, Zhao Jian Gue looked at the recipe, deep in thought.

Even the most difficult to learn sword manual to him was not as confusing and incomprehensible as this.

Boiling the noodles seemed easy: the cooking lady had indicated a set amount of time, but still he burned through a couple of noodle batches, until finally the stuff he fished out looked like noodles.

Scrambled eggs were seemingly simple too: Zhao Jian Gue followed the cooking lady’s instructions and first heated some oil, then put the eggs into the pot.

By then the sky’s color was already evening.

The sect leader personally visited the kitchen, inspecting the progress of his scrambled egg noodles.

He glanced at Zhao Jian Gue: holding a spatula, with clothes and face all covered in gray and black soot. Then he looked down at the wok to see two roundish eggs.

Ji Han became lost in thought.

21

Ji Han pointed at the wok and sternly asked: “What is this?”

Zhao Jian Gue answered: “Scrambled eggs.”

Ji Han: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue continued saying: “I heard from Xiao Lin that you really like eggs so I put in an extra one for you.”

Ji Han: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue: “Just wait a bit, they’ll be ready soon.”

Ji Han spoke: “Do you know before scrambling eggs you have to first crack and discard the egg shells?”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …ah?”

Ji Han picked up a pair of chopsticks from the side and poked slightly at the eggs in the wok. Zhao Jian Gue even added some garlic and ginger beneath them. Two roundish eggs mixed in with some crookedly sliced accompaniments was quite visually….horrifying.

Who taught him to cook like this?!

Ji Han asked: “You’ve never eaten scrambled eggs before?”

Zhao Jian Gue answered: “Naturally I have.”

Ji Han: “Do scrambled eggs have shells on them?”

“No,” Zhao Jian Gue replied, “Don’t worry, in a moment I’ll peel the egg shells off.”

Ji Han: “… …”

… …

Ji Han felt that this martial arts number one swordsman had a lot of illnesses.

He wanted to say a few more words but unexpectedly the eggs inside the wok started emitting a ‘zzzzz’ sound.

He gazed down to look at those two roundish eggs.

Zhao Jian Gue couldn’t resist glancing down as well, and even picked up a pair of chopsticks to gently poke at them too.

“They should be done soon.”

Hero Zhao said that statement with a deep thoughtful look in his eyes.

Ji Han: “You really have an ill-“

He hadn’t been able to finish because suddenly both individuals heard the bang of an explosion.

Though this sound was not as severe or loud as Jiangnan’s Thunderbolt Court’s thunderbolt bombs, it was still enough to startle these two martial arts masters.

They reacted inherently fast: as soon as the sound occurred both had jumped back some feet to avoid impact.

After they thought it was safe to remove the sleeve used to cover their faces, the two finally saw the other’s miserable state.

On the wall, the ground, beside the stove, even on both their clothes and hair were all scraps of whitish-yellowish egg.

There was only one left inside of the wok.

Zhao Jian Gue flashed a confused look: “What the…”

He too didn’t get to finish his statement before the second egg also exploded.

… …

Zhao Jian Gue intoned: “This was an accident.”

Ji Han laughed coldly.

His hair and eyebrows were all covered with egg yolk, looking truly absurd.

Zhao Jian Gue prevaricated: “I can still try once more.”

Ji Han was angry enough to take the wok and slam it onto the man’s head.

Zhao Jian Gue: “Really, I can try aga-“

Ji Han angrily roared: “CLEAN THIS PLACE UP! THEN GET LOST FROM THIS VENERABLE ONE’S SECT!”

22

Zhao Jian Gue was a bit depressed.

Ji Han had told him to leave which is to say… … the seduction plan had to be declared a failure.

What should the Hao Ran League do now? And what should he do now?

Xiao Lin secretly came to comfort him.

“Hero Zhao, you shouldn’t worry,” Xiao Lin said. “Sect leader was just saying angry words he didn’t mean in the moment.”

Zhao Jian Gue grievingly said: “He already told me to get lost, can that still count as ‘angry words’?

Xiao Lin wanted to grab onto Zhao Jian Gue’s hands to reinvigorate the man’s determination to continue seducing the sect leader.

Zhao Jian Gue just exhaled a long sigh.

Xiao Lin: “Hero Zhao, if the sect leader really wanted you to leave then he wouldn’t have told you to clean up the kitchen.”

Zhao Jian Gue didn’t understand.

Xian Lin: “He would have immediately thrown you out.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “That…”

Xiao Lin: “See Hero Zhao! Sect leader still loves you!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “Uh… ….”

Xiao Lin quite excitably exclaimed: “Hero Zhao, you must successfully cook scrambled egg noodles to win Sect Leader’s affections!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

23

By now it was late into the night.

Zhao Jian Gue deeply contemplated the many heroes that offered up their entire lives for sake of the Hao Ran League; he also contemplated his good friends from the Righteous Sects, and finally made up his mind.

He was going to go back to the kitchen and try once more to make a bowl of scrambled egg noodles!

… …

The kitchen’s lights were already open.

Zhao Jian Gue contemplated this. He kept his breaths steady as he carefully walked forward, wanting to see who exactly was in the kitchen.

If it was the cooking lady then it would be perfect because he could then ask her to teach him how to cook a regular-bowl-of-non-exploding-scrambled-egg-noodles.

If it was somebody else he would turn his head and walk away, pretending like he had never stepped in here this night.

But the person in the kitchen was in fact Ji Han.

Carrying a bowl of scrambled egg noodles, the man locked gazes with him right as he stepped in.

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Ji Han: “… …”

24

Actually when Zhao Jian Gue stepped to the doorway, Ji Han had already become cognizant of the newcomer’s presence.

It was just, this was HIS Sacred Sect after all -he didn’t have to hide from anyone.

He didn’t expect that the person to enter would actually be Zhao Jian Gue.

Both people felt a bit awkward.

Ji Han had a frigid expression; in his hand were a pair of chopsticks that held a strand of noodle.

Zhao Jian Gue suddenly realized that this scenario had also been written in the script book, and it too had also been underlined red. It said that if this scenario was done well, the seduction could be successful in one swoop.

He couldn’t help but be a bit excited at this prospect.

Ji Han spared a glance at him, a sullen expression on his face, still unwilling to converse.

Zhao Jian Gue opened his mouth to speak: “I can’t sleep.”

Ji Han: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue: “You can’t sleep as well?”

Ji Han: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue: “Can you chat with me?”

Ji Han: “Cannot.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

How come he’s not behaving as he should according to the script?!

25

The Hao Ran League elders told him that if he were to encounter in the night an unable to sleep Demon Sect Leader, then he was to converse with the man about poems and songs to the point of [romance blossoming in the air]*. He was to further grasp onto the man’s by letting the boy reveal his fragile vulnerable side to him. After finding out about the other’s weaknesses then the seduction plan was near successful completion.

Zhao Jian Gue was not the eloquent poetic type of person. He didn’t know of any poems or lyrics, and couldn’t converse with someone to the point of “blossoming romance”. Everything he knew was about the 3 feet “Qing Feng”** in his hand, and the only things he could converse about involved this 3 feet “Qing Feng”.

Regardless of topic, it was always a good prospect to talk to the other person – as the idiom goes: “different routes to the same destination”. In the end he’ll get to where he needs to be.

Zhao Jian Gue mentally concluded.

He walked a bit closer and opened his mouth to say to Ji Han: “You… … what age did you start practicing swordsmanship?”

Ji Han looked at him icily, not answering.

Zhao Jian Gue had no choice but to go on and continue speaking: “From the first time I was able to walk I picked up a sword. Since then till now has been about 26-27 years.”

Ji Han didn’t reply.

Zhao Jian continued: “You’re younger than me yet your blade accomplishments are not lesser to mine. Your sword skills are fast and fierce: abandoning defense for offense, you’re considered one of the top swordsman in the martial arts world.”

Ji Han finally coldly opened his mouth: “Just what exactly are you trying to say?”

Zhao Jian Gue answered: “Your weaknesses.”

Ji Han: “My weaknesses?”

Zhao Jian Gue nodded.

In actuality, he didn’t understand the elders’ words.

If knowing the weakness of the man meant success, then the first time he saw Ji Han’s swordplay Zhao Jian Gue had already identified the guy’s weakness, but still even now Ji Han treated him indifferently.

Ji Han’s interest was overtly piqued, he slowly sat up straight, indicating for Zhao Jian Gue to continue speaking.

Zhao Jian Gue explained: “Your sword plays are all one gamble; if one was to not hit, then there would be no path for retreat.”

Ji Han stated: “I’ve never once missed.”

Zhao Jian Gue remarked: “But I have at least 80% confidence of avoiding your first strike.”

Ji Han wrinkled his brows, carefully contemplating Zhao Jian Gue’s words.

Zhao Jian Gue spoke again: “If you were willing to give yourself a path for retreat, let your swordplay become more stable, the title of ‘Number One Swordsman’ isn’t a far fetched goal.”

Ji Han hesitated before saying: “You’re saying I can defeat you?”

Zhao Jian Gue: “Over time, your skills will definitely surpass mine.”

This statement he spoke with utmost certainty.

When he was Ji Han’s age, his sword skills were not as good as the boy. Moreover he could tell that Ji Han could really endure hardships, and Zhao Jian Gue was the self-effacing type of person so seeing such a promising young talented man made him very happy.

Ji Han looked at him, a light as if having turned on inside his eyes.

Having found Ji Han’s weakness, Zhao Jian Gue didn’t know what else to converse about.

He could only shut his mouth, standing to the side.

Ji Han suddenly asked him: “You can’t sleep?”

His expression had returned to his usual cold outlook with even his tone having regained that frigid timbre.

Zhao Jian Gue started cursing the concept of looking for weaknesses or vulnerabilities: completely pointless! Faintly, he answered: “Yes.”

Ji Han said: “You want to chat with me?”

Zhao Jian Gue answered: “Yes.”

Ji Han: “You should sit down.”

Zhao Jian Gue was a bit confused: “What?”

Ji Han coldly snorted, before saying: “I don’t like talking with someone while they’re standing.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

He… … successfully advanced another step?

APOLOGIES ELDERS! I ERRONEOUSLY BLAMED YOU GUYS.

*风花雪月, idiom meaning literally wind, flow, snow, moon, which you can altogether picture as fairly romantic settings on their own or together which is how I remember the phrase means “romance is in the air”

How to Incorrectly Ensnare a Demon Sect’s Leader (Ch 11-15)

论如何错误地套路一个魔教教主 by 一只大雁

11

He had just finished saying this before yet again people rushed in through the inn’s entrance.

The Mobei Heroes were still just two individuals, against so many people they were completely outmatched.

Into the already small sized inn suddenly rushed in even more people that caused the place to become even more restricted.

The diners quickly retreated and even the shopkeeper led his employees into the back to hide.

Zhao Jian Gue looked to the people in the crowd; the majority were all people he recognized, all were heroic people in the martial arts world, with several people there that could be considered his friends.

Jin Bei Guo took a step forward, saying: “Everyone, I think there must be some kind of misunderstanding afoot. Brother Zhao is definitely not the type of person to….”

Before he even finished speaking, there were already 3 to 4 people came rushing forward to attack.

Zhao Jian Gue contemplated: none of them know the truth and were only here because of the heroic righteousness in their hearts that caused them to attack him –he could definitely not harm any of them. He could only dodge in every direction, not even unsheathing the long sword from his back.

But continually delaying like this was not a strategy, he was just thinking on how to best get out of the situation when several of the peoples’ weapons got knocked to the ground.

Zhao Jian Gue turned to look.

The thing that knocked down those weapons was a wine cup.

Ji Han’s wine cup.

The attackers exchanged looks, probably because they didn’t expect the youth next to Zhao Jian Gue to have such advanced prowess. They did not dare to move recklessly, pondering over and over again before one of them stepped up, asking: “Who are you? Why won’t you let us kill this villain?”

Ji Han still sat in his chair, a dark expression on his face as he spoke coldly: “I don’t feel like it.”

That person replied: “Do you know what he has done?”

Ji Han answered: “I don’t care what he has done. I don’t permit it and therefore you guys are not allowed to touch him.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

WHAT! Did he already, unknowingly, successfully complete the seduction!

That person was speechless for a bit, only after a long while did he reopen his mouth to speak: “Your excellency, why are you protecting him?”

Ji Han shot him a slanted gaze, saying: “I have an appointment to battle with Zhao Jian Gue at Sword View Summit, before this battle I definitely won’t allow him to die.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Oh.

He jumped conclusions.

12

That person scrunched his eyebrows. “Your excellency may have high martial prowess but you’re still just one person, one sword…”

Ji Han stated: “You all are welcome to try.”

Again several people drew their weapons, surrounding Ji Han and Zhao Jian Gue on all sides.

Jin Bei Guo was still trying to nervously and hurriedly explain: “There must be some kind of misunderstanding here!”

Ji Han stated: “I’d advise you guys to not force me to pull my sword.”

Though he remained sitting, his right hand slowly touched the long sword at his waist side.

Suddenly someone else opened their mouth to ask: “Who exactly are you?”

Ji Han glanced at him coldly, proudly declaring: “Ji Han.”

The entire place suddenly fell silent.

What gave them fear was not the newly acquired name of the Demon Sect’s leader but rather the sword in the individual’s hand.

The sword was over 3 feet long, the scabbard blackishly gray, its structure old fashioned, hanging diagonally from the man’s waist, with no unnecessary accessories.

It looked like something shabby that could be bought with just a few silver.

But when paired with the name “Ji Han” this unremarkable sword became one of the most frightening weapons in all the martial arts world.

Before Ji Han became sect leader, he was already hailed as the best fighter in all of the Demon Sect –the number one swordsman there.

He just had to unsheathe his sword for blood to fall.

Zhao Jian Gue pulled his sword for heroism; Ji Han pulled his sword for killing.

Zhao Jian Gue showed them mercy but Ji Han definitely would not.

Ji Han already was speaking again: “Do you guys still want to try?”

A great many people retreated backwards.

With the two great swordsmen collected together, who dared to still step forward even half a step.

Moreover, who knew if there were any other Demon Sect members waiting to ambush them in the vicinity.

Ji Han stood up; a few people were shocked into pulling their weapons.

But Ji Han just straightened out his sleeves before preparing to leave.

The people even willingly parted to form for him a path.

Ji Han walked outside a few steps before suddenly stopping, turning around, looked at Zhao Jian Gue, and said expressionlessly: “Follow.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Jin Bei Guo grabbed onto Zhao Jian Gue’s hand: “Brother Zhao, that person is the Demon Sect’s leader, you must not-“

Zhao Jian Gue knew what he had to do.

Going with Ji Han would equate to stamping himself a “Demon Sect Accomplice, Wicked Beyond Redemption” brand. In the future, those of the Righteous Sects would definitely not show him mercy.

He pushed away Jin Bei Guo’s hand and contemplated the scripts those elderly heroes had given him.

… …

“Brother Jin you don’t need to say anymore. I’ve made up my mind.” He recited one word at a time from the script: “Since I’ve decided to follow him then we’ll [be together in life or in death]*.”

Everyone’s weapons dropped to the ground.

Jin Bei Guo: “… …”

Ji Han: “… …”

*Idiom, used typically between couples to describe undying love ahahahahaha

13

Jin Bei Guo was stunned: “Zhao…Brother Zhao, you and this Demon leader… … you and him…”

Ji Han: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue: “I….”

This scenario was not written in the script, how was he to respond?

Everyone’s expression was a bit strange.

Jin Bei Guo saw none of them speaking, remained dazed for a moment, before murmuring through his lips: “Wouldn’t have thought that Brother Zhao…that you would… …wouldn’t have thought…”

Ji Han’s expression was suddenly grim: “Just now none of you heard any of that.”

Jin Bei Guo who had not yet recovered from his daze, confusedly muttered: “I heard it…”

Everyone, one after the other, echoed:

“I heard it…”

“I also heard it…”

Ji Han stayed silent for a moment before suddenly his expression turned ferocious: “If any of you dare to reveal today’s events, in the future even if I had to chase you to the ends of the world I will cut down your head.”

No one dared to say anything in reply.

After that Ji Han turned away, grabbing a hold of Zhao Jian Gue’s hand, he dragged the man away.

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

The carriage driver had been waiting outside this entire time –when he saw the two coming out, hand in hand, he became a bit stunned.

Ji Han didn’t care for the man, pulling Zhao Jian Gue, he used qing gong to run to the town’s outskirts.

Zhao Jian Gue’s felt dazed himself but could only follow Ji Han.

He thought his own qing gong was excellent but it seemed Ji Han’s was just as comparable –in the blink of an eye, they had arrived at the outskirts.

Ji Han pulled Zhao Jian Gue to a wall’s corner, angrily saying: “Do you have an illness or something?!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “My health has always been very good, thank you.”

Ji Han: “…you really are ill!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “I really don’t-”

Ji Han didn’t want to argue with him anymore, his face was filled with anger: “Didn’t you say ‘human speech is to be feared’?! Saying something like that, you’re not afraid of rumors spreading?!”

I specifically want rumors to spread with you.

Zhao Jian Gue didn’t dare say this statement though.

He could only bow his head, ruminating on how to respond.

It was then that he took notice of both their palms.

Ji Han was too angry to realize that in this moment he was still holding the man’s hand.

Zhao Jian Gue called out to him: “Sect Leader Ji.”

Ji Han came out of his angry reverie in alertness: “WHAT DO YOU WANT NOW?”

Zhao Jian Gue moved the hand that was tightly gripped by Ji Han’s, face filled with sincerity: “Can you loosen your hand? It’s quite painful.”

Ji Han: “… …”

Ji Han fiercely threw his palm away. As if having seen some kind of monster, he jumped a few feet away too.

Zhao Jian Gue very politely said: “Many thanks.”

Ji Han pulled from within his robes a handkerchief and wiped his hand as if his life depended on it.

Zhao Jian Gue asked: “Sect Leader Ji is ready to take me to the Demon Sect now?”

He watched as Ji Han sent him a dagger-filled gaze, voice brusquely saying: “…Sacred Sect.”

Ji Han threw the handkerchief to the ground, furiously turned to walk away.

Zhao Jian Gue quickly followed to catch up, exclaiming: “Sect Leader Ji wait up!”

Ji Han turned his head to glare at him: “You really are ill!”

Zhao Jian Gue felt very aggrieved: “I’m not!”

Ji Han: “You definitely are ill!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “I’m not!”

Ji Han: “You are!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “I’m not!”

Ji Han: “YOU ARE!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “I’M NOT!”

The carriage driver who had just arrived: “… …”

He decided to turn his head, as well as the hackney, around in the other direction, pretending to enjoy the roadside scenery.

14

Zhao Jian Gue went with Ji Han to several Demon Sect branches –the least important ones of course.

Ji Han didn’t hide anything from him since the Righteous Sects had long since known about the locations of these particular branches; only because of a lack of manpower had no one been sent to wipe out these subsidiaries yet.

Eventually he realized that having someone sit on the roof of the carriage all day was too unsightly an appearance, yet neither did he want to squeeze with Zhao Jian Gue in the same carriage.

Ji Han could only throw Zhao Jian Gue a horse, letting him fend for himself.

While travelling it seemed like Ji Han had set his mind to not waste anymore excessive words on Zhao Jian Gue. On the occasion where speech was necessarily, he limited his words to three or less.

Zhao Jian Gue settled in quietude.

Just the ‘seduction plan’ didn’t have any more progress.

News of Zhao Jian Gue having murdered the leader’s head disciple long since spread to all corners of the martial world. No matter where they went, there were Righteous Sect people watching them intently, yet not one person dared to step forward.

Because there was another rumor that travelling besides Zhao Jian Gue, at all times, was the Demon Sect’s number one swordsman.

As for why this was the case, no one dared to say.

For a while various rumors speculated from all directions, so much that Ji Han felt even the roadside wild dogs looked at them with an abnormal gaze.

It was like everyone that looked upon them shouted from their hearts:

Freaking homosexual! Freaking homosexual!

Ji Han was very unhappy.

He really wanted to just stab Zhao Jian Gue to death with his sword and settle once and for all these rumors.

But killing the man was a very difficult feat.

Ji Han had no choice but to endure, everyday using a great deal of his time to hone his swords skills. Ji Han’s swordsmanship had long since been able to split every falling Autumn leaf in a flash, yet still he was not confident enough that during their battle –before Zhao Jian Gue could even unsheathe his sword- he would be able to pierce the man’s throat.

At this this time, he could only hope that in a year’s time when they battled, he’d be able to stab Zhao Jian Gue to death under the gaze of everyone, clearing his own name.

Just thinking about it made him very happy.

15

In the end, they arrived at the Demon Sect’s headquarters.

Zhao Jian Gue never thought that in his lifetime he’d be able to so openly/justly, walk in.

With Ji Han so intent on not paying him any attention, the seduction unable to progress, and him having used up most of the prepared responses, Zhao Jian Gue’s first priority was naturally to search for the undercover agent the Righteous Sects had stationed here.

But he actually didn’t know the person’s identity at all.

The elders only told him that the agent was someone intimately involved in the sect, that after he infiltrated, the agent would come find him.

Zhao Jian Gue could only wait in his room.

He contemplated the identity of this agent in his head: capable of knowing so many sect secrets, even able to easily enter/exit the leader’s bedroom- presumably was someone with a very high role in the sect.

Ji Han’s personal attendant carrying food, knocked on his door, before opening it.

Zhao Jian Gue spoke: “You can just put it on the table.”

Though Ji Han didn’t want to speak with him, the man at least didn’t treat him shabbily in daily necessities. The attendant put the food on the table but still didn’t leave.

Zhao Jian Gue: “Do you need something else?”

The attendant had a mysterious unpredictable expression: “Hero Zhao! It’s me!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Turns out the agent wasn’t someone high on the Demon Sect stratum but instead was Ji Han’s personal attendant?

Though the sect leader’s personal attendant was able to easily access confidential matters, and was indeed able to see the portrait hanging by the leader’s bedside every night –but exactly because of these reasons, shouldn’t the personal attendant’s screening process be extremely strict? How exactly did the Hao Ran League instill their agent here?

Zhao Jian Gue couldn’t help but be a bit hesitant.

The “agent” who looked like he wasn’t even 20 yet, enigmatically stepping forward to give the “code phrase” for proving his identity.

He first gave his background information: “My surname is Lin, Shuang Mulin. Hero Zhao can call my Xiao Lin.”

Zhao Jian Gue nodded slightly.

Xiao Lin continued: “Hero Zhao inevitably is a bit suspicious. The leader of the martial arts world instructed me to ask a question from the script book, to prove my identity.”

The leader did indeed mention this to him.

Zhao Jian Gue could only nod once more.

Xiao Lin asked: “If the Demon Sect leader were to become suspicious of Hero Zhao, started arguing with you and you didn’t know how to explain, what are you supposed to do?”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Oh great.

Of course he remembered this line.

This paragraph was at the very back of the script book, and even had red cinnabar lines underlining it.

To be honest, Zhao Jian Gue really didn’t want this scenario to ever happen.

Xiao Lin looked at him with eager anxious eyes.

He coughed once, speaking through it: “I believe you.”

… …

His words only just fell when suddenly someone pushed open the door.

The two of them were both surprised. Zhao Jian Gue turned his head to look at Ji Han, behind whom of which stood two maids, all with a startled expression on their faces.

When the leader’s personal attendant leaned so close to a Righteous Sect hero, naturally people would start to suspect something was going on.

Xiao Lin backed away several steps, intoning: “Sect leader, this was just-“

Ji Han interrupted his words, expression frigid: “Zhao Jian Gue, just what were you two doing?”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

How to Incorrectly Ensnare a Demon Sect’s Leader (Ch 6-10)

论如何错误地套路一个魔教教主 by 一只大雁

6

Ji Han was stunned for a while before managing to open his mouth and ask: “You….what do you want?”

Zhao Jian Gue resolutely said: “Want you.”

Ji Han: “… …”

Even Zhao Jian Gue himself felt uncomfortable all over after saying that line. He could only furrow his own brows while he didn’t say another word. In his mind, he criticized those so called wise heroes and wondered how they even came up with this book of scripts in the first place. Absolutely bizarre.

Both parties stayed quiet for a long time, Ji Han eventually made up his mind and said: “Do you know who I am?”

Yes! Another line that matches with the scripts!

Zhao Jian Gue: “I know, but I don’t mind.”

Ji Han said: “You really know-“

Zhao Jian Gue; “I only care for your person and nothing else.”

Ji Han: “… …”

The carriage driver from awhile back had already squatted to one side of the carriage with both of his ears covered, constantly repeating the words: “I haven’t heard anything. I haven’t seen anything. Don’t kill me. Don’t kill me. Sect leader please don’t kill me.”

… …

Ji Han suddenly said: “You’re really Zhao Jian Gue?”

Zhao Jian Gue said brusquely: “Indeed.”

Ji Han coldly muttered: “Who would have thought that the world’s number one swordsman was a homosexual.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

No. Let me explain.

Ji Han: “I only want a match.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Ji Han: “If you can’t battle with me then its best we each went our separate ways.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “I…”

Ji Han had already turned around and gotten back inside the carriage. The driver hurriedly sat back in position, waiting on his master’s orders at any moment.

Zhao Jian Gue kept looking at Ji Han, frowning and furrowing his brows.

With the conversation over, the driver with one lash of his long whip sent the carriage jettisoning forward.

Zhao Jian could only stand in place, covered entirely in dirt and dust with a deep grievance in his chest.

He wasn’t actually a homosexual.

But a gentleman’s word, the lash on a horse**; if he promised the elder heroes to seduce the Demon Sect leader then that’s what he had to do till he couldn’t anymore.

His qing gong*** was good enough to be ranked in the world’s top ten. Even if the Demon Sect leader drove away, it wasn’t really that big of a deal.

… …

He could absolutely catch up and seduce the sect leader!

**[A gentleman’s word, the lash of a horse] a proverb that means a gentleman must keep any promise he makes.

***Qing Gong is something very common in cultivation/martial arts plots, basically a skill category that allows a user to travel fast across large distances

7

As fast as Ji Han’s horse carriage was, it was no match for the qing gong of the world’s number one swordsman.

Zhao Jian Gue didn’t spend much effort chasing.

Previously his qing gong had been ranked in the world’s top ten but it didn’t mean that his sword skills were not as good as his qing gong, it just meant that with how advanced his swords skills were, there were really few and far in between opportunities to exhibit his qing gong prowess.

So very few people have ever seen the sight of him ardently chasing after a carriage.

While his robes were still as white as snow and hair was still neatly kempt, his complexion was less than attractive; anyone who chased a carriage past more than a hundred lis* would naturally not have that good of an expression.

Not to mention the fact that he knew the evil leader he was chasing right now was comfortably sitting in his carriage the entire time; the carriage’s interior probably had a roast chicken and a jug of liquor.

He could smell the fragrance of the latter.

Stopping at a small town, the Demon Sect leader finally disembarked and walked into the most upscale looking tavern/inn in the town.

Zhao Jian Gue had no choice but to follow in as well.

Walking in, he turned his head to and fro to see that this business was quite bustling; people coming in and going out. Just how exactly was he supposed to se…seduce that Demon Sect leader?

… …

Ji Han sat at the best seat of the tavern.

Zhao Jian Gue had a gloomy expression as he sat down next to the man.

Though all the accompaniment dishes were served, Ji Han never touched his chopsticks and just frigidly asked the man next to him: “How come you’re like a ghost haunting me?”

Those heroes sure could predict things like a god! This line was also in the book of possible scripts!

Zhao Jian Gue: “I’m not a haunting ghost, I’m just chasing you.”

Ji Han still coldly spoke: “What are you chasing me for?”

Zhao Jian Gue thought hard before answering: “I want you to take me back to the Demon Sect.”

Ji Han: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue faltered for one moment, expression masking his emotions as he corrected himself: “Back to the Sacred Sect.”

Ji Han: “… …”

The corner of Zhao Jian Gue’s lips twitched slightly before he attempted to flash an evil coy grin: “Stop resisting, you can’t shake me off.”

Ji Han: “… …”

*literal translation is over a 100 “li” [里] which is an archaic unit of measurement for 300 paces, about 0.5 kilometers per “li”*, a hundred “li”s translates to about 50,000 meters, over 30 miles hahahahaha

8

Ji han suddenly said: “Taking you back to the sect is an easy matter under one condition.”

Very good! The plan is half afoot!

Zhao Jian Gue: “Under what condition?”

Ji Han: “You just have to duel me and I’ll take you back.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Who would have thought this leader would yet again lead him back to this.

It seemed like this duel was unavoidable.

“Time and location are free for you to choose,” Ji Han spoke, “All you have to do is accept the challenge and I’ll definitely engage.”

Zhao Jian Gue remained silent not saying anything for a bit.

Ji Han sneered: “Since when was the number one swordsman such a coward that he isn’t brave enough to even accept a challenge.”

Things not predicted in the script were things he was afraid to answer.

It was a pretty unreliable script. So many missing lines. Better to rely on oneself.

Ji Han spoke: “Are you brave enough to accept or not?”

Zhao Jian Gue: “I accept.”

Ji Han practically jumped out of his seat. He pressed one hand on the old fashioned sword at his waist, a frisson of excitement entered his typically thousand-year-frozen icy gaze: “Unsheathe your sword!”

Zhao Jian Gue remained sitting, not moving at all. He slowly poured himself a cup of tea.

Zhao Jian Gue never drank alcohol. Drinking caused one’s reactions to be delayed which in a duel between sword masters could decide the duel’s result in an instant. Retaining the title “Number One Swordsman” was no easy matter; one had to constantly be at the top of one’s peak.

Ji Han raised his eyebrows and asked: “Why aren’t you drawing your sword?”

Zhao Jian Gue raised his head to meet his gaze, speaking: “I just want to know if the Demon Sect Leader’s words are accountable?”

Ji Han crossed his brows: “Naturally.”

Zhao Jian Gue said: “Very good.”

He took a sip from his cup of tea, before saying: “You said time and location is for me to decide so I’ll book the battle for one year from now.”

One year’s time was enough for him to waylay Ji Han, giving the Righteous Sects time enough to rally their forces in preparation for an attack.

Ji Han froze for a moment, before his expression darkened: “That’s shameless trickery!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “Time and location were to be chosen by me, was that not what you said?”

Ji Han: “…yes.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “Are the words of the Demon Sect Leader accountable or not?”

Ji Han: “Accountable.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “Very good, one year from now, at Sword View’s Summit.”

Ji Han: “Ah.”

Ji Han didn’t say anything else.

Instead, he poured himself another cup of liquor; expression frightfully scary.

Zhao Jian Gue exhaled the breath he’d been holding.

He was glad that the Demon Sect leader was still young in age –as intelligent as he was, he still was a bit naïve in terms of how the martial arts world worked.

At least he had the first step of the “plan” complete.

Ji Han suddenly stood up to go out.

Zhao Jian Gue hurriedly followed.

Ji Han shot him a cold look: “What are you following me for?”

Zhao Jian Gue: “You promised to take me back to the Sacred Sect.”

Ji Han asked: “At what point did I promise that.”

Zhao Jian Gue was stunned: “You clearly said-“

Ji Han interrupted: “I said if you dueled with me I’d take you back. Since the battle is scheduled for a year from now, come find me in a year and I’ll take you back to the sect.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Oh great. This guy learned fast.

In that case, Zhao Jian Gue had no choice but to play the shameless card.

Zhao Jian Gue: “I said it before, you won’t shake me off.”

Ji Han coldly said: “I know.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “If you don’t take me back, I can also just follow you back.”

Ji Han pointed to the driver waiting outside the door. “What do you estimate his inner qi level to be?”

Zhao Jian Gue didn’t understand where he was going. He had noticed before that the driver was a hidden martial arts expert, someone with decades of experience, so naturally not deficient in inner qi.

Ji Han spoke: “He has 30 years of practiced inner qi; if he were to shout in the street, quite possibly half the town would be able to hear him.”

Zhao Jian Gue crossed his brows: “What are you saying this for?”

Ji Han said: “If you follow me one more step, I’ll immediately have him shout in the street.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “And what does that have to do with me?”

Ji Han: “He’ll shout ‘Zhao Jian Gue is a freaking homosexual’, what do you make of that?”

Zhao Jian Gue: “You-“

Ji Han: “I took a look just now, this town has a few people from the ‘Righteous’ side of the world.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Ji Han icily said: “Hero Zhao, you are welcome to continue following me.”

Having said that, he stepped out of the doorway, his steps sharp but he portrayed in them complete satisfaction.

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Okay.

So he knows how to play.

The idiom: [Entrusted for help from someone, until the end of time about them.]*

Is basically competing who is the most shameless -for the Hao Ran League, for the vast sense of justice in his heart, he was willing to be shameless this one time.

Zhao Jian Gue inhaled a deep breath, raised his heel and stepped forward.

Ji Han was shocked.

Zhao Jian Gue stated: “Though I haven’t trained for as long as him, my inner qi is definitely not deficient to his.”

Ji Han was slightly hesitant to ask: “What are you planning?”

Zhao Jian Gue: “If he were to shout, I will join him to shout a few fun things too.”

Ji Han: “What would you shout?”

Zhao Jian Gue: “Professing for your love.”

Ji Han: “… …”

The carriage driver continued covering his ears as he hid next to the horses, pretending like he couldn’t hear anything at all.

Ji Han angrily intoned: “You don’t dare to!”

Zhao Jian Gue: “You could try and find out.”

Ji Han: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue: “Gossip tends to spread fast in the martial arts world.”

Ji Han: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue: “And there tends to be people that like to add fuel to the fire.”

Ji Han: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue: “Bashan Hero and The Two Heroes of Mobei originally didn’t have any connection; they merely united once to enjoy some liquor together. The Heroes of Mobei had poor alcohol-toleration and ended up sleeping in Bashan Hero’s bedroom for the night.”

Ji Han: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue: “The next day someone spread the rumor that Bashan Hero arranged to drink with the Mobei Heroes because his goal was to purposely intoxicate the two.”

Ji Han: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue: “Five days later another person spread that the point of intoxicating the two was to spend a night of passion with them.”

Ji Han: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue: “Half a month later, this rumor changed into Bashan Hero having disreputable intentions -that the Two Mobei Heroes had feelings for Bashan but kept denying them–that the liquor was dosed with the Coupling Euphoric Sect’s coupling powder –that even the food was sprinkled with Qian Ji Wang Family’s anesthesia powder.”

Ji Han: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue: “Those three were originally longtime best friends but now because of rumors they have all been labelled ‘together’.”

Ji Han: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue sighed: “’Human speech is to be feared’.”*

Ji Han: “… …”

Zhao Jian Gue continued speaking: “It is said that those three actually live close to here, Bashan Hero also happens to be my longtime good friend-”

Ji Han: “SHUT UP.”

Zhao Jian Gue did shut his lips.

Even he was running out of lies to fabricate.

Sorry Bashan Hero, Mobei Heroes.

For the sake of the Hao Ran League, you guys will have to be sacrifices…

… …

The driver had already set up the carriage by now and was currently scrunched up next to the horse, wearily watching the two.

Ji Han coldly glared at Zhao Jian Gue.

Zhao kept his mouth closed, not talking.

Ji Han: “Get in the carriage, don’t say another word.”

10

Zhao Jian Gue was just about to step in the carriage.

 Ji Han: “Wait.”

Zhao Jian Gue turned around to look at him.

Ji Han coldly replied: “I don’t like warranting idle gossip from people. Since Hero Zhao’s qing going is so powerful, it’s probably better for you to run alongside the carriage.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

He could only stand by and watch Ji Han get into the carriage, gritting his own teeth.

… …

This was Zhao Jian Gue’s first time enjoying the scenery of the world from the roof of a carriage.

Chasing after a hackney was an incredibly exhausting feat -he did that obediently for the last half hour and then decided to just climb onto the roof, lifting up his robes to sit down, and no longer caring for any ‘respectable image’ of a hero.

What’s more, this demon was deliberately messing with him.

They had driven down this particular road’s path three times already. Only when possibly because the Demon Sect leader had exhausted himself fooling with him did the carriage stop and once more parked in that small town.

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

The horses were breathing heavily alongside their driver who had been sunned under the bright day into having a forehead of sweat.

Zhao Jian Gue’s white robes no longer looked that white -hair no longer that neat.

Yet Ji Han comfortably strolled out of the carriage, hand holding an elegant foldable fan.

Zhao Jian Gue was slightly irritated.

He forcibly suppressed the anger in his own chest, asking Ji Han: “Why have we come back here again?”

Ji Han answered: “I suddenly realized I haven’t eaten yet.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

Very good. Overtly trolling him.

… …

Employees of the establishment saw the same people stepping in again and were quite surprised.

Ji Han ordered the same side dishes and liquor as before.

Zhao Jian Gue coldly sat next to him.

He didn’t even have time to take a sip of water before someone rushed into the inn.

That person stopped at their table, appearance full of anxiety: “Brother Zhao, you have to quickly leave!”

This person just happened to be Bashan Hero, Jin Bei Guo.

Zhao Jian Gue couldn’t help being stunned.

He just finished speaking badly about Bashan Hero, so inevitably there was some guilt in his heart –especially since none of those things had ever actually occurred. It was only because Bashan Hero was his good friend, and that was the first name to come to his mind –so he casually said it.

Ji Han scrunched his brows at Ji Bei Guo and asked, “Who are you?”

Jin Bei Guo seemed to not have enough time to answer the question, speaking: “The Hao Ran League said you killed the leader’s head disciple, currently a mass of people are looking for your location, just now someone said they saw you at this inn and lots of people are hurrying over.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

This was another portion of the plan the elders had mentioned to him, in order to make this plot look all the more real.

Ji Han was quite displeased at Jin Bei Guo for ignoring him. He couldn’t resist asking once again: “Who are you, what do you want?”

Jin Bei Guo had no choice but to answer him: “Humbly, I am Jin Bei Guo.”

Ji Han’s expression suddenly became slightly enigmatic: “Bashan Hero, Jin Bei Guo?”

Jin Bei Guo replied: “Yes, that is humbly me, may I ask who this young hero is….”

Jin Han’s gaze became strange.

Zhao Jian Gue felt quite guilt and moved his gaze away.

Ji Han asked another question: “Where are the Two Heroes of Mobei?”

Jin Bei Guo froze: “The young hero here is familiar with them? Not to hide anything from this young hero, those two brothers are indeed travelling with me, I instructed them to wait outside of the inn, in the case of anyone from the ‘Righteous’ Sects showing up –we can easily inform Brother Zhao to escape in time.”

Ji Han looked out of the window to see two people in their 20s keeping watch out there; the two had practically identical appearances –with hints of Middle Eastern descent: their eyes, hair, and face were slightly different from those of the Central Plains.

Ji Han turned his head and looked back at Bashan Hero, his expression becoming even stranger.

Jin Bei Guo didn’t understand the reason for this and so he pulled Zhao Jian Gue’s sleeve, asking: “Brother Zhao, why does that young hero keep looking at me with that odd gaze?”

Zhao Jian Gue could only dryly chuckle once, intoning: “That…uh…I’m not sure either.”

How to Incorrectly Ensnare a Demon Sect’s Leader (CH 1-5)

论如何错误地套路一个魔教教主 by 一只大雁

Chapter 1:

Currently in the martial arts world “Righteous” and “Wrong” have been in conflict for a long time. A bloody storm has flowed across the rivers and lakes* continuously as a result.

With the forces of the Demon Sect advancing, the Hao Ran League, a group of senior elder martial arts experts in the world have been worrying their own hair white but still have not thought of any way to deal with the situation.

Suddenly, their undercover agent gave news of the Demon Sect leader passing from a violent illness and that a new Demon Sect leader had taken up the throne; this person used to be the previous leader’s godson: named Ji Han, he is a man vastly skilled in martial arts. Highly intelligent and attentive, he acts resolutely without falter, yet still has one fault that could prove fatal for him.

He likes men.

The undercover agent witnessed that next to Ji Han’s bedside was a portrait of the current best swordsman in all the rivers and lakes of the world*: Zhao Jian Gue, dressed entirely in white and very handsome, rumors said that this portrait was hand drawn by Ji Han personally. From the moment Zhao Jian Gue became famous the portrait had apparently been hanging by Ji Han’s bedside.

With this intelligence given to the Hao Ran League an epiphany came to the leader: with Ji Han’s long term affections for Hero Zhao, so long as the man is willing to help them, then the league could be saved.

Zhao Jian Gue is a man known throughout the world for his swordsmanship and unparalled good looks. His swordsmanship prowess is considered unseen before in the last hundred or so years. The leader hurriedly sent to invite Zhao Jian Gue over. Offering up good water and tea, the entire league of the world’s martial arts seniors suddenly knelt before him and explained through tears their plan:

They want him to seduce the Demon Sect Leader.

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

*Jiang Hu = literally, rivers and lakes but it’s an idiom meaning all corners of the martial arts world.

Chapter 2

When all the respected seniors of the martial arts world are kneeling in front you, regardless of what they’re asking, you have to say yes. Even more so for Zhao Jian Gue who carried with him the title of a “hero”.

The Hao Ran League specially named Zhao Jian Gue savior of the martial arts world. The elders went as far as to book with heavy amounts of gold Jiangnan’s number one headliner of the White Flower Brothel, Yue Qing Qing, to come over and tutor Zhao Jian Gue on how to successfully seduce the Demon Sect leader.

Yue Qing Qing spread her hand fan and spoke charmingly: “Hero Zhao, you were born so attractive. You shouldn’t always have such a stiff expression, if you were to just smile a bit more, even angels would be entranced into falling for you.”

Zhao Jian Gue scrunched his brows, not replying one word.

Yue Qing Qing spoke again: “You could also say some soft words too, men love to hear soft words…”

Zhao Jian Gue asked: “Soft words?”

Yue Qing Qing covered her mouth while she laughed: “If you were to call someone ‘dearest darling’, who could possibly not love you back?”

Zhao Jian Gue coldly replied: “How can such impetuous words be spoken of so liberally.”

Yue Qing Qing’s expression became a bit awkward: “Hero Zhao, can you treat me with a kinder gaze and not use such murderous eyes to stare down this humble servant?”

Zhao Jian Gue coldly turned away.

Yue Qing Qing felt extremely awkward: “Hero Zhao, you should at least smile a little. Just smiling a bit would be very nice…come on smile!”

Zhao Jian Gue remained silent for a while before barely managing to pull up the corners of his mouth.

Yue Qing Qing: “………..”

Zhao Jian Gue: “………..”

Yue Qing Qing: “………..”

Zhao Jian Gue: “………..”

Yue Qing Qing returned the gold to book her, expressing her inability to teach such a student.

3

The elders, angry at the failed attempt and impatient for improvement, hired from Qinhuai River, their most famous male escort, Yu Xian Er.

Yu Xian Er had proclaimed before that the amount of male escorts he’d taught in the world were in the tens of millions. That no matter how cold the individual is, so long as they pass through his hands, that individual can become a coquettish, charming, little waist flexing slut that causes everyone’s noses to bleed.

The first step in teaching is naturally to have Hero Zhao take off his clothes. Yu Xian Er extended out a slender white elegant hand to grab onto Zhao Jian Gue’s neckline but his hand immediately got grabbed and constricted at the pulse line of the wrist.

Yu Xian Er exclaimed a shrill painful sound before looking up to see Zhao Jian Gue’s ice cold countenance.

Yu Xian Er whispered softly: “Hero Zhao, only when you’ve removed your clothes can I most effectively teach you.”

Zhao Jian Gue shot him a gaze, speaking: “Such an obscene display during the daytime, completely improper!”

Yu Xian Er still would not give up; he purposely shifted back and forth against Zhao Jian Gue’s body, movements as fluid as spring water, wanting to awaken the passion suppressed down in Zhao Jian Gue’s heart.

Zhao Jian Gue frigidly declared: “If you move again I’ll twist off your wrist.”

Yu Xian Er: “… …”

Yu Xian Er had no choice but to stand up straight, resentfully turning to leave. His feet accidentally stepped on the hem of his own clothes, eyes looking toward the ground he prepared for impact but Zhao Jian Gue extended a hand out to grab him and ended up catching him in both arms. He declared, still in that cold indifferent tone: “Take care.”

Yu Xian Er’s eyes took in Zhao Jian Gue’s up close handsome appearance, dressed in clothes white as snow, and found his own heart pounding inside himself. In the middle of his cradled long dip, Yu Xian Er suddenly felt a spark seemingly ignite in his heart.

… …

Yu Xian Er ended up resigning and returning the money the elders paid as well.

“Hero Zhao’s entire self is too righteous,” he said. “I can’t teach him.”

The martial arts elders wouldn’t give up, grabbing ahold of Yu Xian Er they said they were willing to pay more, just that he try once more to teach.

Yu Xian Er: “It isn’t a matter of money.”

He hesitated for a long time, before suddenly lowering his head which had taken a shade of blushing red.

Yu Xian Er: “I’m afraid that if I continue teaching, I’ll fall in love with him.”

Martial arts elders: “… …”

4

The martial arts elders felt themselves out of options.

Their undercover agent gave news that the Demon Sect leader had disguised himself and was currently in the vicinity of the Hao Ran League.

They couldn’t wait any longer!

The group of elder heroes got together to write a book of possible scenario responses, made sure Zhao Jian Gue had the entire thing memorized, told him to contact their undercover agent should anything happen –before kicking him off the Hao Ran League with the made up excuse that Zhao Jian Gue accidentally killed the leader’s head disciple; as part of the story, the elders led a group of martial artists to hunt him down.

According to the plan, Zhao Jian was supposed to be outnumbered by his enemies with a severely injured body that would collapse right in the path of the Demon Sect’s leader, he would then be taken in, and then eventually certain ‘unspeakable’ things would happen between them.

But they soon realized that this plan was a bit unrealistic.

Zhao Jian Gue after all was the number one swordsman in all the world; the entire group that ‘chased’ him was unable to touch even his sleeve.

The leader of the league shouted wearily to him: “Hero Zhao! You have to pretend to be injured!”

Zhao Jian Gue spoke: “If I were to actually get wounded by you guys that would look even more suspicious.”

The leader of the martial arts world suddenly realized: oh right.

Zhao Jian Gue’s reputation is widespread famous after all: how could someone like him be so easily injured? The Demon Sect’s leader had an extremely exquisite, questioning mind too, had they actually gone by the original plan then the leader would have surely thought this was something afoot by the Righteous Sects.

Good thing they had an alternative plan.

… …

Zhao Jian Gue hugged his sword as he waited for the Demon Sect leader to appear by the roadside that led to the Hao Ran League.

From a distance he saw a horse carriage approaching that looked exactly like the style the secret agent said the sect leader took. He stepped forward to block the road. When the aggressively driven carriage approached him, the driver sent a whiplash towards him –only to have his own whip get caught and nearly yanked off of his own carriage.

The driver quickly stopped the caravan and viciously shouted at him: “What rubbish are you to dare and halt our carriage!”

Zhao Jian Gue said: “I’m a human. Driving so rampage-like, you guys should be careful not to hurt passers-by.”

The driver still wanted to admonish some more but coming from inside the carriage came a very cold voice: “Enough.”

The carriage driver shut his mouth.

Zhao Jian Gue knew that inside the carriage was the Demon Sect leader in disguise.

Demon Sect leader asked: “Who are you?”

Zhao Jian Gue had no choice but to follow the script the elders had given him: “I’m a human.”

Demon Sect leader: “What kind of person?”

Zhao Jian Gue indifferently said: “A lost person.”

Demon Sect leader: “Where are you going?”

Zhao Jian Gue wrinkled his brows, waited a long moment before finally, resolutely speaking the next half of the script.

Zhao Jian Gue: “The road to your heart.”

Demon Sect leader: “… …”

5

Suddenly the entire landscape fell silent; everyone shut their mouths and didn’t say another word.

After a while, someone finally lifted the carriage’s curtain.

Zhao Jian Gue looked towards a youth in his early 20s wearing all black as he sat in the middle of the carriage, watching him coldly.

The leader of the martial arts world had let him see a portrait of Ji Han before. The painting had about 70-80% similarity with the person currently before him. Very good. The one in the carriage was indeed the Demon Sect leader, Ji Han.

According to the plan those heroes had come up with, Ji Han should presently be shocked by his appearance. When the subject of one’s long term affections suddenly appears, there will undoubtedly be some kind of visceral reaction. Zhao Jian Gue need only wait with a shut mouth for Ji Han to react, then choose the most appropriate reply from the list of possible scripts those heroes had given him.

Ji Han’s cold expression indeed showed a surge of emotion.

Zhao Jian Gue started going through in his head all the possible lines he’d spent all morning memorizing.

Ji Han asked: “Zhao Jian Gue?”

Zhao Jian Gue answered: “Yes.”

Ji Han laughed frigidly. “Very good.”

Zhao Jian Gue didn’t reply.

Those elderly heroes did not tell him how to respond to this specific phrase and he was too afraid of messing up the entire plan to do anything except shut up and wait.

Ji Han asked another question: “Where’s your sword?”

Zhao Jian Gue: “My sword?”

The direction of this meetup seemed a bit wrong.

Ji Han furrowed his brows in displeasure, coldly inquiring once more: “Where’s your sword?”

Zhao Jian Gue intoned: “My sword is with me.”

Ji Han sternly barked: “Unsheathe your sword.”

Zhao Jian Gue felt his entire heart at a loss. “Why do you want me to unsheathe my blade?”

Ji Han answered coldly: “The world uniformly says you’re the best swordsman in the land, I’m not content with this result. I hang your portrait on my bedroom wall so as to remind myself to train daily so that I can one day defeat you.”

Zhao Jian Gue: “… …”

This scenario seemed very different from what was foretold.

Zhao Jian Gue pondered for a long while before carefully saying: “I don’t want to battle with you in a place like this-”

When all is said and done, he was sent here to seduce the Demon Sect leader. If they were to do battle then there will inevitably be injuries and a casualty –it’d be great if he were to win but what if he were to lose, then what would the Hao Ran League do?

Ji Han interrupted his words: “Then what exactly do you want?”

Having spent all morning memorizing the scripts, finally a line matches!

Instinctively, Zhao Jian Gue blurted out his next response: “I want you!”

Ji Han: “… …”
